Has there ever been a contestant on Jeopardy who picks a category and goes for the most expensive amount first (ie, "I'll take US Presidents for $500)? I can see someone doing it to try to get the "hardest" questions out of the way.

That's what most people have been doing since James Holzhauer used it as part of his strategy to win.

It's definitely happened. When I watched when I was younger, I remember saying "why don't they go for the big ones first" and remember (rarely) marveling when someone did that.

When was the last time you watched Jeopardy? $500 hasn't been the most expensive dollar amount in probably at least 20 years.

It's been happening for awhile now. First longer-term champion I remember using it as a strategy was Arthur Chu. A lot of the longer-term champs also go Daily Double hunting in the middle amounts.

Everyone hated him cause he jumped around picking random amounts leaving the board looking like swiss cheese. Jeopardy needs to put the Daily Double in the 1st spot to make those spots worth picking again. I mean make the question harder if it is the dd thou idk if they already adjust the dd difficulty or if its just randomly picked after all the questions are laid out

This is sort of related, but I want to give a little recognition to Jason Zuffranieri, a multi-day champ that came shortly after James Holzhauer's run. He clearly paid attention to James' style of gameplay and worked it into his own, and I appreciate that. There's a logic to it, and I don't understand not following it to maximize your potential earnings.
Plus, he knew about a variety of stuff (also like James, actually) and I always root for those players. Everyone has their interests and strengths, but I like it when a person knows some stuff about 16th century European poetry *and* heavy metal music. In my opinion, they're smarter than people who only know the really bookish things.

Emma Boettcher, who ended James Holzhauer's reign, deserves a lot of credit, too. She's remarkable in that she's one of the few (if not only) champions who unseated a long-term champ to have a decently long reign in her own right. Usually the champs who beat the Jenningses and Collinses of the show last one day; two days at most.

Emma did her part. She secured the first finalist spot yesterday. Now we need James to do his.
