How Would YOU Like to See Wrestlers Use Social Media?

To me, it can be a great tool to escalate feuds and tell stories. Becky has done this better than anyone. The issue is, no one else really has even tried.  mean they are entitled to use their social media however they want, but wrestling is weird. Fans expect talent to be in characters all the time. It's hard to picture someone as a soulless monster when they are playing with their cat on Instagram.

Woods, Ryder, and Becky have all used it extremely well, but few others have.

I'd like to see Social Media not used in storylines, ect. They had a little bit with the Becky stuff, but it's something that is new and fresh once.

As a way to interact with fans. If you want to use it to advance your storyline once in a while? Fine. However, the first priority is to use it as a playtform to make the wrestlers more accesable to the fans.

You know, things that can develop a lasting relationship between fans and the stars.

I'm cool with them using it to do character work, even though it's most pointless since so much of it never even gets brought up on TV. Really, though, they can do whatever they'd like with their accounts since it's easy for me to just ignore them if I don't like what they do.

This is correct, but I’m a firm believer in the ‘don’t use social media to post every little thing that pops up in your mind.’

I think The Miz is one of the better examples of this. He uses it for a little kayfabe, especially as a heel, but it’s clearly curated. You know he likes the Browns, he’s a family man, he promotes his brand. That’s it. He’s not out there dunking on fans or posting empty social commentary. Both of which his buddy Ziggler does. Miz keeps kayfabe alive, while showing a little bit of himself. That’s pretty much what you want. I’m sure there are others who use it this way as well.

As an older fan, I'm torn.

Some of the talent definitely "gets it" and uses it really well in a way that enhances the product. It's also been massively beneficial for many non-WWE performers making themselves known without the backing of a corporate juggernaut.

On the other hand, I do miss the "ignorance is bliss" days when wrestlers had more of a larger-than-life mystique, rather than having 24/7 access to their brain vomit. In serious cases (like performers who have abhorrent beliefs etc.) there's the silver lining of seeing red flags earlier than later, but for the majority, it's disheartening watching them damage their own auras because they don't know how to Twitter well.

On the small side of things, I’d dissuade talent from using their shoot names on social media, if only to keep kayfabe mostly alive.

I’m not particularly fussed... My only real suggestion is to find a more diplomatic way of responding to fan criticism, because, while these talents shouldn’t lay down and be doormats for the torrents of abuse they get from the scummier parts of Twitter, they don’t need to write off legitimate critiques as blind hatin’.

I'D LIKE to see people do what Zack Ryder did/does and just make there own content. do a video blog or make your own podcast. just get on with your own fun. like Xavier and Asuka have done.

To people complaining that wrestling social media "kills kayfabe" (which was dead LONG before social media, so I don't get that complaint.), do you guys find it hard to invest in, say, Deadpool because Ryan Reynolds is being normal on social media? Like, you know Anthony Hopkins wasn't a real life cannibal, but did that make his performance as Hannibal Lector any less creepy?

I don't get the complaints about wrestlers using social media...it's 2019, 99% of people know it's a work.

I see it more as—I don’t want a wrestler I like to post a stupid opinion about a cultural issue. It varies, but that’s part of what ruined Ziggler for me. (His lackluster work did most of the trick, I’m adamant.)

For a lot of people, Seth being dumb on social media ruined his appeal. It’s not that we think the characters are real; it’s that the real people can sometimes ruin the character. It counts, especially when the line between ‘real person’ and ‘character’ has been made so thin these days.

Occasionally I wish they had character accounts separated from the actual person's account... but then I know the reality is that 4 seconds later the line would be blurred and the whole idea would be shot.


So I learned to love the total kayfabe annihilating posts of Undertaker saying "LOL GOTTA PAMPER YOURSELF" as he's drinking a beer while getting his hair done. I'd much rather have that then the strangely blended ones that are half kayfabe half real so they blame everything "bad" on the character not themselves.
