I hate to be the guy to shit on this a bit, but while Punk being back is great it's a band-aid over a deep wound. The problem is WWE's booking and undercutting talent. It's funny because you know if Punk comes back he'll be part-time which is exactly what he complained about before he left. It'd be like WWE's 2019 Blizzcon, "Hey look over here, Diablo IV! Overwatch 2! Ignore the stuff outside!"

I'm going with a theory that they were always going to sign him and make him and Satin revolving panellists but it's also a good time for it to happen for them. If it helps WWE, it helps WWE but it's not really for their benefit as much.

I'm a longtime Punk mark, but putting on my cynical realist hat for a moment:
Backstage may be produced by FOX and not WWE, but it's a show designed to get eyes on a brand they've invested heavily in. There's no sticking it to WWE going on here. Vince isn't shaking his fist at being one-upped by the network and the rebel who left on his own terms.
This is a business deal, this is optics. This didn't happen without everyone's approval behind the scenes. It helps Punk save face and keep the persona that fans love him for, a way of looking like he's not "selling out", while catering to us smarky tipes during a time our attention is drifting elsewhere. If Punk shits on an angle, you can bet it's self-aware self-deprecation designed to rekindle the interest of a particular demographic, just like the "pipebomb" or the many, many other worked shoot promos that have gotten the corporate stamp of approval.
Again, this is coming from someone who loves the guy, and good for WWE if it brings viewers back, but we shouldn't kid ourselves about what's happening here.

Again, this is coming from someone who loves the guy, and good for WWE if it brings viewers back, but we shouldn't kid ourselves about what's happening here. On the other hand, the core difference between Punk and probably most of the people who appear on Backstage is that Punk has an agent. I'm not privvy to the conversations they had or even how Fox's audition process was but I'd put money on the idea that Punk didn't accept this deal with the intention of suddenly appearing on the roster in any way and wanted that wall firmly put down. Like, what seems clear about Backstage as a show is Fox pushing for a show similar to other sports so you have people in the business allowed to talk about aspects of the business they usually wouldn't which is a positive not just for fans but also potentially morale and show that you can have a place to vent and not be punished for it. Booker doesn't need WWE with his radio show and such, Paige is retired, Renee is pretty untouchable since ESPN was reported to be interested in her early this year and I'm sure TSN wouldn't say no to her going back. And then there's Punk. Considering this is a Fox deal, WWE have no real ties to it (as far as we know, you're correct about that and with historical precedence with the UFC) and would need to make their own offer to have him come back. Punk doesn't seem to need to come back but WWE, ideally, would like for him to come back for the obvious reasons. So if he makes a good impression and build interest, you'd be damn sure a dump truck will head to Chicago with an offer and as much ice cream bars and jets as he wants. tl;dr - Punk has an agent. They probably negotiated the best deal which might make your point right but also leaning more towards the client/network winning out.

Look in my eyes, what do you see? An unlikely FOX employee.
I get what people are saying with it being underwhelming, but much like when Bret returned at the Hall of Fame it didn't take anything away from the huge pop when he finally walked out in an arena full of people again. It will be the same here. Having Punk on WWE TV is bizarre but if/when he walks out on a WWE stage, the roof will still blow off.

I am gutted.
I was desperate to see him in AEW. It would’ve been industry changing

Honestly, it's a testament to the badass-ness of Logan Paul. The second he calls out CM Punk for a fight, he crabwalks right back into the WWE fold.

LOL As a guy who was once a giant CM Punk mark... they deserve each other. My thoughts exactly.

I'm honestly surprised that anyone is surprised.
Wasn't this confirmed before the show even started airing?

I'm honestly surprised that anyone is surprised. Wasn't this confirmed before the show even started airing? It was more that the rumours had foundations with the audition happening, nobody denying the auditions happening and the random Punk tweets. When Satin got confirmed, people just suspected he lost out to him rather than what it probably was which is Satin and Punk being a revolving chair.
