What's next Wrestling business? What other curves you can throw? There's almost a month and a half left of 2019. Something ridiculous is probably going to happen. Liv Morgan will finally be on TV.

I found out this news this morning on Twitter by seeing AJ Lee trending.
Because yes, the moment he came back people starting screaming and demanding she come back next.

I wish this was on a live show, as I don't watch Backstage but cool that he's back.

I'd love it if he transitioned into a commentator at some point but I don't think he'd put up with using the buzzwords and Vince in his ear.

This seems a little underwhelming to me. If he returned at a live arena show or went to AEW to give them more juice, it would have felt more special. He’s being paid to be Skip Bayless now. Not exactly what I was expecting when Punk returned to wrestling (and let’s be real, we all knew it would happen in some capacity).

Konnan is managing Buddy Murphy now? Mandy and Sonya are on an excursion to STARDOM? What do you mean Zack Ryder is the Unified 24/7 & DDT Heavymetalweight Champion?

I'm a longtime Punk mark, but putting on my cynical realist hat for a moment: Backstage may be produced by FOX and not WWE, but it's a show designed to get eyes on a brand they've invested heavily in. There's no sticking it to WWE going on here. Vince isn't shaking his fist at being one-upped by the network and the rebel who left on his own terms. This is a business deal, this is optics. This didn't happen without everyone's approval behind the scenes. It helps Punk save face and keep the persona that fans love him for, a way of looking like he's not "selling out", while catering to us smarky tipes during a time our attention is drifting elsewhere. If Punk shits on an angle, you can bet it's self-aware self-deprecation designed to rekindle the interest of a particular demographic, just like the "pipebomb" or the many, many other worked shoot promos that have gotten the corporate stamp of approval. Again, this is coming from someone who loves the guy, and good for WWE if it brings viewers back, but we shouldn't kid ourselves about what's happening here.
On the other hand, if they do crap all over WWE on Backstage, that gets Fox a bunch of disenfranchised ex-WWE fans who love to hear people in the business/inside WWE (or who've previously had ties to WWE), especially big/respected names like Punk, agree with them that WWE sucks now. It doesn't necessarily hype WWE on Fox, but you could probably make a bet that Backstage would be more likely to be watched by hardcores and haters than pro-WWE casuals, so a calculated risk could mean you don't lose much by trashing WWE, but you do gain from people who are sick of it. Doesn't necessarily do WWE themselves any favours, but it would sweeten the deal for Fox, they get to have their cake and eat it.
Also, in a more positive outlook for WWE's part in this, if they do play it straight, if they do rip on WWE when it sucks but praise it when it's genuinely good, I think those disenfranchised fans would be more likely to trust the voices coming out of Backstage. Those fans might then be inclined to check out the good bits, because they've been told about them by people who don't say "it's great!" lightly.
I mean, take some of the comments here about podcasts where WWE get directly involved, people don't trust WWE's messaging, it's just so corporate and it never truly admits when they get it wrong. Backstage has the potential to be WWE's voice to the people who don't believe the hype, by pointing out those flaws it makes Backstage look like it's not just another Vince arse-kissing project, but a genuine public critique by people on the payroll.
'Course, it's a fine balance, and if any part of engagement by disenfranchised fans is based on the idea that these guys are inside and they know it sucks but they can't or won't do anything about it, that could lead to Backstage feeling a bit tokenistic and meaningless. But that'll come down to who's watching, for what reasons, and whether the acknowledgement that WWE does a lot of sucky things is sufficient to quell irritation.

Taking all the politics out of it, the show needed someone that would make it different than something you'd see on the network.

I'm sure that'll push their ratings from 50K to...80K.
