I mean something like The Rumble or the G1 Climax.
Because the Diamond Battle Royal isn't it. it needs to be something unique that has actual consequences and reward. With a big-time feel.

I think that's something they can do once they get more established. Though I'd personally love to see an American promotion do a round-robin tournament like the G1, that's unfeasible right now with AEW's current structure.

I'd like that or a higher profile trios tourney. Maybe not as big as Chikara's but that'd definitely be my blueprint.

I could absolutely see them running their own version of G1 in the near future. Hell, TNA pulled it off once, it’s really only WWE that’s gun shy on a round robin tourney.

They need to establish what their Wrestlemania will be, then have at least one ppv that is its own unique thing. And while it should be unique, it can’t be Russo-level ridiculous. Tough task, but doable.

AEW definitely needs a tent pole event, and I also agree that if it were a round robin I would be most satisfied. Another thing that I think would be interesting (and synergize with it's PWG roots compared to it's NJPW roots) would be a weekend single elimination tournament like the Battle of Los Angeles.

My answer is always tournaments, so co-sign on them doing a G1-style thing or trios tournament. Having the annual rankings work into the seeding would be a natural idea.
Another match type that would be interesting to do is the one that that Chicago area promotion does, the name escapes me. Starts as a 4x4 match, then the winning team fights in a 2x2 match, then the winning team fights 1 on 1. Probably not an annual tentpole event match but could be interesting.
One thing we did as an exercise in high school wrestling was to get everyone around the room in order of weight, then the lightest guy starts with wrestling the next heaviest guy. Whoever wins takes on the next guy up in weight. That went all the way up to the heaviest guy. Then it went back down in weight again. I don't know where I'm going with this exactly but I feel like there is a good pro wrestling idea buried in there somewhere.

Maybe instead of just a trophy the winners split a tag title shot and a World Title Shot.

With Lucha Underground gone, someone else ought to try Aztec Warfare matches (20 man, Royal Rumble-style staggered entrances, elimination by pinfall/submission).

A trios tournament would be a lot of fun. And they already got some trios they could use in the thing like Best Friends and Cassidy, SCU, Jurassic Express, the Inner Circle (Ortiz, Santana, and Guevara), the Elite (Bucks and Omega), possibly a new incarnation of Villain Enterprises with Scurll, Page, and a third.
