Thing is, one of the criticisms appeared to be that Dynamite feels too "WWE Lite"...and I honestly have no idea why he thinks that. So having not listened to it yet (I could since I got the Black Friday deal for the podcasts but I probably won't end up doing it), there are people around the 'net that say AEW copies WWE when it comes to having an opening promo segment or comedy with Jericho and others. Honestly, I feel there is a good case to be made that the almost 20 years of no big mainstream wrestling competition has lead some people to believe that an alternative has to be strictly right down the middle not WWE to every nook and cranny (same could be said about "the marketplace of ideas" in the age of big conglomerates holding large monopolies, but that's a whole can of worms) and honestly, that's not really fair to put on anyone trying to get in the space. I'm not saying Dave feels that way but it's something I've noticed. If companies like AEW end up copying WWE in aspects, it's only because that space has been baron for so long, of course WWE's ideas are going to be seen as de facto and expecting someone to go fully against that is just sort of weird. But, like, the key difference between AEW and the main roster is that it feels like stuff in AEW leads to things down the road. The main roster has been on autopilot probably since the Draft 2.0 era of Smackdown fell apart. Marvel does really fun superhero movies. Nobody should copy them to the T but it also doesn't benefit the medium if the only alternative content was "The Boys". Yeah, I haven't heard it either so I'm not going to judge much, but the feeling I get is that Meltzer sees NXT as a bigger "alternative" product to main roster WWE than AEW is, but I don't find that a particularly fair comparison as each show is trying to do something completely different - NXT is designed as a niche alternative to Raw and SD, a compliment to them, while Dynamite is the main show for the entire new promotion, by definition they almost can't be the same type of show. Some seemed to think Dave almost wanted AEW to be a bit more like a US-based NJPW, and maybe the use of more North American style wrestling tropes has him thrown off...but, well, look at the talent pool they have and what the current trends are in US wrestling. Besides, the Elite guys have clearly borrowed some booking ideas from the Gedo playbook, but they never did their personal in-ring style in the pure NJPW mould. That said, one critique he did make that made a lot of sense is what a lot of people here are saying: things like the MJF promo should NOT have been relegated to social media, considering the fact it wasn't only a really good promo, it was also important in the storyline since it explained that he hired BBB to attack Cody. Can't just assume that people know who everyone on the show is or how to follow them online.

Get people involved in the product via social media and make that stuff seem important. WWE has YouTube promos up the wazoo that might as well not exist with how much they mean to the product overall so the opposite of that is good. But there’s a means to it. Have a bit of a clip of it with the revelation on the show, have Excalibur say the jist of it, tell people to go there to see the rest but make it so people don’t have to go there to see it in full. Balance the process out. Hell, it doesn’t take 5 seconds to say where BTE is which I find weird they never really did properly.

I thought once AEW got going they’d put focus on BTE as its own big thing, not just kind of relegate it as another extra youtube-feeling thing. I do agree with the jist of what Dave’s saying. And I’m someone that always watches BTE, and tries to go out of my way to keep up with their social media presence. That being said: haven’t watched every Dark. Hell I’ve still to see that MJF promo. All that’s extra to me. Same with WWE. If it’s on the show, on a PPV, that’s hard canon to me.

I can see what Meltzer is saying. There has been some things from the last few episodes that is similar to what you'll see in WWE. The first few episodes they had some things that made them different e.g. Schiavone interviewing SCU on the top of the stage and then brawling with the Lucha Brothers, The Inner Circle making their way through the crowd with tickets, Jericho's brawl with Cody in the concessions area..
It's important to do things that you wouldn't see on other programming to make it different.
Also that MJF promo should be on the show. It's part of the story. Leave the social media stuff to post match interviews.

Really all I've ever really wanted out of wrestling is, "WWE but it's good," and if AEW's going to be that I'm perfectly fine with it.

Still no DVR numbers from last week for NXT and AEW?
