I mean, I've got no qualms with Sly Stallone, but I had a lovely Rocky movie marathon with my folks a few months ago where, every Thursday night, we'd watch all the Rocky movies and, honestly, I get that the whole point of Rocky was that he's meant to be this awkward and shy bum who is just really good at taking hits and dishing them back; but after the second movie, I just wished that Apollo Creed was the star of the picture.
I get that it'd be hard to imagine Rocky without Stallone, but I'd totally watch a series of movies with Apollo Creed as the star, he was just so much more dynamic, entertaining and appreciated showmanship more than Rocky did. I mean, maybe it's me, but I was getting a bit tired of the fact that Rocky never changed as a character, really. Like, he was always too nice for his own good.
Honestly, he should've kicked Paulie out by, like, the 2nd movie, I honestly don't get why they kept bringing him back, even though I'm sure the actor who played Paulie has looked better in other stuff, but that's another issue that I have with Rocky, he just lets Paulie walk all over him no matter how badly he treated Adrian or how he kept screwing up.

A prequel series following Apollo's rise to the top would be interesting to see, maybe if they cant come up with a plot for Creed 3.

We basically did with Rocky 3.
Guy at the top of his game underestimates opponent.

So a movie where a humble man is given the chance of a lifetime and busts his ass to prepare for it, even when he himself is sure he has no chance.
Vs. a movie about an arrogant star more concerned about his investments than even doing the least bit of preparation for his fight.
I mean, do you want to root for Cruella DeVille to get that coat she has always wanted?

I get the impression the OP didn't mean changing the first (and probably second) Rocky movies, but after them focus on the once great, but now aging and humbled showman who's looking for one last moment of glory. It's an interesting idea, but of course there would be a very real chance that this would change real world history and let the Soviet Union win the Cold War. Also, while Apollo was never the villain later Rocky opponents were, he could be kinda a jerk at times. By focusing an entire movie on him so much you run the risk of the average moviegoer just not finding him likable.

Nah; you get emotionally invested in Rocky’s struggle in the first two films and really root for him to win. If you had a cocky but talented fighter in Apollo as the main character you’re in risk of alienating the audience.

Instead of punching sides of beef Apollo would be dining on filet mignon Instead of running up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art Apollo would have walked them on his way to touring Impressionism exhibit Instead of chasing a chicken to improve his reflexes Apollo would be chasing models at Studio 54 (ok, this happens in Rocky II, but you get the point)

Rocky did change as a character. His entire arc in the first movie was going from a guy wasting his talent to going the distance. Second movie he achieves the title, the third money and fame had him go a little soft until getting back the eye of the tiger etc.
Apollo was a great foil/rival And then friend, but there wasn't nearly as much character there. You could do a series on his rise, but it's not Rocky then.

Every Thursday night you'd watch all six Rocky movies?

Apollo was a great character but Rocky has to be the lead.
The whole franchise was as good as it was because of Sly.

No, but Carl Weathers is criminally underrated in that film.

Apollo is the more interesting character but I feel like you don't get the story right unless you do it with Rocky.

Now, if you excuse me, I have to get a stew going.
