I love it.
It's only really an oddball in the fact that it is pretty much completely different than the first Zelda game.
They reuse a lot of stuff that has become synonymous with the series in that game.
(I mean for starters that there are THREE triforces.)
that said the difficulty spikes pretty damned high at points... ESPECIALLY the last palace.

I remember being so hyped when I got this for my birthday as a kid and then just being crushed by how much fun I wasn't having. Yup, this game was the turd in my punch bowl on Christmas morning. Unforgivably bad.

By far my favorite game of the franchise, and one of only two that I actually like.

Then there's that Rambo NES game that's a lot like Zelda II:

It took a bit to get used to but seeing as how I have the option of save states, this game is actually pretty fun. Sure some purists will call it cheating, but considering the difficulty, I’d say it’s a fair trade off

Yup, downthrust is stupidly overpowered. Especially in hallways that are three tiles high, once you get in the enemy's hitbox and mash the down button even the blue Ironknuckles aren't as scary.
Oh, and play Zelda 2 Randomizer, it'll be fun. XD
