I missed NXT and AEW tonight Was Brandi segment really that bad? Essentially it started off with Brandi doing commentary for Riho / Statlander and just shitting all over everything, especially burying Statlander's gimmick, and then Kong and Cruise came out and started openly attacking both of them in front of the referee who did nothing about it. Then some guy came from under the ring looking like a chubby Quan Chi and the commentators just did the, "We know who that is!" thing, then the heels were beaten down and the match continued, until they got back up and grabbed Statlander's feet to screw her over because reasons. Then the heels attacked both of them until the other faces (including Shida, who was at ringside the whole time and just not doing anything to help) made the save.

Britt Baker was ringside as well, but chose to do nothing, which cemented her heel turn, and might have been the best thing to happen here.

Gah, yeah, I completely meant to type Shida and got distracted, my bad.

I know I'm in the minority but I actually enjoyed Brandi on commentary. I thought she was funny, especially calling Excalibur Exhibit and commenting on him wearing a mask,(probably because I've read people qho follow wrestling but don't know about Excalibur saying the same thing) and question Kris Statlander being an alien. It might have gone on a bit to long but it wasn't heel Cole level of cringe worthy.

I missed NXT and AEW tonight Was Brandi segment really that bad? It all comes down to preference but it was more like a segment bundled together than it being a “worst of all time” people elsewhere laud it as. Bad? Oh no doubt.

Guys who you have to be a super hardcore fan to know about getting surprise debuts while Excalibur vomits in to the mic about how he knows who they are is quickly becoming one of the worst things about AEW. Like, this was already awkward as hell when it happened with Blade & Butcher, and now they're doing it with a guy that's even more obscure. Gives me bad flashbacks to the WHAT'S ____ DOING IN THE IMPACT ZONE era. Blade and Butcher, I feel like they didn't think "you'll know who this is", but they should have probably just not had Excalibur have a name for him if they didn't want him to further clarify, with the Blade thing. Just be like, "One of them's Allie's husband, but why are they here?" or something, and keep it mysterious, if you don't want to infodump. They went too far one way, not far enough the other. This one was just badly handled no matter how you slice it, though. It's weird because normally I think Excalibur is a really good commentator, but when someone is debuting he is traaash, especially tonight. Dr. Luther's absolutely had a pretty interesting career if you look him up, but jesus, the way they were talking about him was like he was white guy Onita.

I really like Brandi, but I really hate her in this role.
The whole stable word work MUCH better if it was just a Heenan Family style collection of goons that she manages rather than with the whole dark cult overlay.

After a night of mulling it over here are my thoughts:
80-85% of that segment was trash. I'm usually pretty high on AEW and maybe tend to rate a show higher than I should, but because I do that I also have to be their worst critic when it comes to stuff like this. I get what Brandi on commentary was trying to do, get heat. The problem is she needs to talk to Jericho about not burying the face while getting heat. If you are MJF you can get away with it by being over the top and having the charisma to do it without screwing himself or his opponent over. I remember in Jericho's first book he did something similar and got chewed out for doing something in the same vein and Brandi could use that kind of wisdom going forward. The more legit you make your opponent feel to the audience, the better reaction you get when confrontations happen.
The match itself, sans interference, was as good as I thought it would be, which is why I was so pissed off by the stupid crap that occurred. AEW has usually been great when it comes to heels screwing with faces, usually done before or after a match. If they were going to do it during the match then it should have been a dq to get maximum heat. WWE over uses dqs and AEW doesn't use them, there is a middle ground to be had.
The Luthor thing was what it was, I had zero idea who he was and if I had never read Jericho's book I probably wouldn't have known even after Excalibur "explained" him. More hardcore guys is always a plus since that seems to be a bright spot for AEW at times so good pick up nonetheless.
What I will say worked was Statlander and, in junction, the prompting of other faces to drive off the NC. Statlander looked like a star in the match, not only in the ring against Riho but by taking out both Mel and Kong. Taking out Kong puts her on another level that I don't think anyone else in the division is and says a lot about how they feel about her. Fantastic stuff in a sea of crap imo. I am looking forward not to the tag match next week as Shida and Statlander are their star faces and should put on great stuff with the NC. Let's just try not to become like Suzuki-Gun and make the interference stuff a common trope in their matches please.
Overall, while I am glad the division is getting multiple feuds, this was a swing and a miss in the short term, though I still have faith they can make this work as they have been very good at turn around.

Or even if she was doing that, she acted like Kevin Sullivan and they never explain why.

Just quoting this to say that I generally agree. I can see what a lot of it was trying to do and as someone else pointed out, some tweaks and cutting down on time might have improved or saved it but outside of the crowd reaction (because a lot of it did get positive reactions), I don't think it quite worked as much as they wanted to. I think at the very least, they can make Statlander more from all this even though a more straight up "she wins and then they attack her, leading to babyface run ins" would have worked as well, if not better.

Jim Sterling was at this show, so I'm looking forward to him ripping the women's segment apart on his next video if he gets to re-watch it with Brandi's shitty commentary.

The guy, Luther looks like he'd be a partner of or feuding with Jimmy Havoc I thought he was Gangrel honestly till they said who he was, seemed like a huge clusterf*** that whole segment.

Posting this because it kinda fits the thread ...sadly, he isn't wrong. A lot of the textured criticism gets lost amidst the Cornette talking points and emphasis on Brandi's marriage. And it's a shame, because for all the flaws that the women's division has - sexism on the part of the booking isn't one of them. That's great, but when the angle isn't working, it isn't working.
