I trust Feige. The one mis-step they had director wise is maybe letting Jenkins go from Thor 2.
I guess you could make the argument about Wright and Ant Man as well. It feels like most of these decisions are made to keep the 'brand' cohesive. One can argue that's stifling&makes stuff same-y, but both Gunn and Waititi have been able to use their own voice within that brand.

I have a feeling Gunn and Waititi are what Marvel wants more of their directors to be like, not in terms of creative freedom but in terms of "make it look and feel like theirs"

Does seem like that could be a sign of some problems with production this close to release, but I can't really claim to be that broken up about it since I really just thought the first one was a subpar remake of Iron Man. It'd be interesting to see if better material can come from someone else taking the helm.

Eh *shrugs* directors are absolute replaceable the way Marvel develops films. And I agree Dr. Strange was just aight so maybe whoever steps up can make his or her vision shine through Marvels system.
FWIW the concept of the sequel sounds dope (like one of the only MCU films in the forseeable future I’m actually excited for) so i do wonder where the rift stemmed from.

Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation) would be a swell replacement

They've said repeatedly that they want Doctor Strange 2 to be a horror movie (or was it "like" a horror movie?), maybe this director didn't fit that. I dunno.

Considering Derrickson's filmography is almost exclusively in horror (directed The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister, Hellraiser: Inferno, and Deliver Us from Evil), I would've thought it right in his wheelhouse. That said, doing horror within the confines of the strictly PG environment is difficult to pull off. Could be he simply felt he couldn't do the movie justice with that restriction.

Thought the director of “Krampus” would be good. Looked him up, Michael Doughtery, and apparently he’s a comic book creator and was involved in a couple comic book movies and directed “Trick ‘r Treat” too.

It's definitely seeming to me like the director wanted to be a horror film, but then Feige/Disney had other ideas(apparently they merely wanted it to have some scary sequences not be straight up horror according to a recent clarification by Feige). Doctor Strange 2 Isn’t REALLY A Horror Movie, Kevin Feige Clarifies

I'm disappointed because I'd like to have see Derrickson getting another film with Doc Strange, because of helping to make the original a success and I like the creative continuity Guardians and Ant-Man have had.
On the other hand, yeah, Feige and the MCU have earned trust in what they're doing and I don't imagine a shortage of good candidates.

Marvel afraid to rock the boat as per usual to keep the kiddies and adult kiddies entertained at the theme park.

A lot of speculation that Derrickson walked because he was asked to rewrite too much of his original story to accommodate the tie-in to WandaVision.
It's definitely plausible.
