I`m sure this topic has gone over and over again. But I still wanna ask
When I started watching it was at the end of JBL career(Around the time Shawn lost his money) and he was randomly losing to Cena or stuff like that. And at the time I was still kinda Smarky Mark(I enjoyed Heels like Khali and MVP,disliked Cena.Even if I was still a Mark) I really didn`t enjoy him.
And that really didn`t change much but I decided some years later to watch his past.(And I remembered about this thanks to Reliving Wrestling).
Basically the sense I get is that JBL did have a great feud with Eddie ,legit great feud. But everything else was just awful. He could work the mic at very least. It seems he got where he was more because Vince saw a lot of himself on Bradshaw.
Personally he seems like an early case of Mid-Carder that ended up forced as main eventer. But FAN's more knowledgeable members, what is your opinion?

Eventually I would say it was a success. Initially no. When he won the title I couldn’t believe WWE actually would give him the belt. It was the Jinder Mahal WTF why? Title win of 2004. But JBL grew well into the role especially towards the end of the year and into 2005.
Looking back maybe, like Jinder, they should have built him up a little bit more before putting the title on him but he was the perfect foil for Cena’s first title win and did put on some genuinely entertaining matches with Eddie & Cena in particular.

Started his Main Event Run like he was "Mid-Card-For-Life Totally Out of His League Pretending to be in the Main Event Jeff Jarrett" and ended his run as "Dude made it work".
So Success.

By virtue of him putting over Cena and sending him over the top, it is a success

I'd say it was a success as even after he lost the title, they could put him in as a challenger to Cena or Batista later on and he was a great heel on the SD brand.

Yet another forced Midcard main eventer, that got the push of a lifetime that could get anyone over, and never had It.

Big success. He was the anti-Jinder Him and Jinder are not really comparable. JBL was NEVER a jobber. He was a mid card solo guy... and a strongly booked tag guy. Jinder was a jobber in his entire WWE run

I feel dirty saying it, but I enjoyed the whole "I AM A WRESTLING.... GAWD!" schtick.

I'd say successful, in hindsight, and compared to more modern day main eventers.
Aside from some of his matches I just found the character forced and boring.

Failure. People hated him in the 'ugh, pass!' way when he was on top, and people changed the channel. It seems better in retrospect because the WWE have done worse since then, but that does not make it good.

A success. IMO, his reign has aged really well over the years. Dude was a great chickenshit heel champion who sold every challenger as a legit massive threat to his title.

We even have another example in this very thread of Jinder. I remember reading that ratings tanked with JBL as champion, isn't that kinda a point towards not being good as a worl champion? I think his ideal spot would have been strong mid-card that occasionally sees Main Event action.Which is already MUCH higher than Jinder

Say what you will about JBL the man, his character might have been one of the last of the truly great heel characters.
