Watching a clip of Minky Momo where the titular character got killed by a out of control delivery truck, made me think. What other animated shows are there that had death that came seemingly out of nowhere.
To me, the following came in mind:
Animals of Farthing wood
The show had plenty of death, but the first ones stayed in my mind the most, when the animals were crossing a highway, one of the hedgehogs got paralyzed of fear and their partner joined him for their last moment before getting ran over by a truck.
Noah's Island
In the show, a gorilla character's partner drowned along other animals when a ship they were transported on sank. that's one of the death's I know of in the show, there may have been more. For a show about funny cartoon animal characters, death by drowning is quite rough.
Alfred J. Kwak
The Titular character's parents and siblings get run over by a car, leaving Alfred an orphan and the "Main antagonist" shoots an spy octopus with a freaking pistol!
These three are the only ones that come in mind, how about you guys?

It may have been spoiled at the time but I don't remember it being done: Dan Turpin being vaporized by Darkseid in "Superman: The Animated Series".

Dinobot in Beast Wars. On reflection it had a lot of build up, but it did came off as a surprising turn for me in a series that was getting increasingly more complex in it's second season. A pity it's never talked about too much, people will always prioritise Prime's death over this in conversation.

It's been a while since I scoured the whole thing...I don't know if there's any quick ones like Turpin who was a semi-regular on the show. The only other non-villain deaths I can remember (well, one is debatable on if villain during the scene or not) are the girl from the post-redesign Batman episode with Clayface and Ace from the Royal Flush Gang in the Justice League Unlimited episode "Epilogue".

Like maybe Darkseid omega beamed him to Apokolips or something. But nope. Destiny's was disturbing in how much it left to the imagination. Who knows what else that sicko did.

Considering that Prime's death was undone and Dinobot's wasn't (and his spiritual successor/clone sacrificed himself in the end as well), I certainly think Dinobot's is definitely the better one.

To people who haven't read the manga or managed to avoid comment sections, shitposts, and memes (ambulance jokes, donut jokes, etc.), how about the deaths of many important characters in the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure anime?

Yeah, reading the comic, I was expecting to see him having the snot beat out of him, but then came the ambulance.

Checked this clip, was there other deaths like this in the "Timm universe"? It wasn't shown on-screen but the mindless Solomon Grundy's death by Hawkwoman was moving (for me, at least). And, of course, Lex at the beginning of the Justice Lords story... still one of the most chilling moments is when Superman says "I feel great!"

One Piece.
Ace.
It was the first time in the series that someone died outside of a flashback, and the first time a character didn't ultimately shrug off what should have been a fatal blow.

Well that’s a suppressed, horrified memory from when I was about 6... gonna go stare into space while The Sound of Silence plays on loop in my head.

See I remember the hedgehogs. But I was reading about the series after posting and came up to the pheasant bit. That shits down deep in my deleted file. I remember vague images, but even now by memory is refusing to acknowledge it. Because holy hell, that is some Hostel nonsense.
