This thread made me find more info about " Animals of Farthing Wood" - I want to find some sort of DVD box so I can see all the episodes again. It was one of my favourites as child. There's bunch of death in this series. I think it's something like 40 episodes. Found a video where there's most of the death scenes (probably) ... My older sister and brother also remember the hedgehog scene, that's sad ma'an.

Pops on Regular Show. Considering that the only characters who had died were villains (though Anti-Pops did kill Earl a few episodes before), seeing Pops sacrifice himself was hugely surprising (of course, Pops ending up as the most important character was even moreso, although he was the star of JG Quintel's very first cartoon, so it does make sense in a full circle way).

Dr. Destiny killed a girl via dreams in "Only A Dream", but she wasnt a recurring character. I was sure at the time they were going to bring back Turpin in a future episode. Like maybe Darkseid omega beamed him to Apokolips or something. But nope. Supposedly this was the original plan. They were eventually going to show in a later episode that Turpin was teleported to an Apokoliptian slave pit that he would've escaped from and went on to lead an underground resistance to Darkseid. But the show got canceled before this could be revealed, and when they had a chance to revisit this on Justice League, Timm and co. felt Turpin's death had become too iconic to undo like that.

watership downtake your pick. I think this film mentally scarred a lot of people in the 80's & early 90's (and recently when channel 5 in the uk put it on at easter for a couple of years.

Oh the 90s, I remember when my parents had bought us a freakin' Frankenstein cartoon! Only if mother would have known what it included... 5 year me thought it was the greatest thing ever, though. Blood and guts! I recently found this VHS from parent's garage. (Same thing happened pretty much always when the parents had bought some random japanese anime, we did not have internet then...)

To people who haven't read the manga or managed to avoid comment sections, shitposts, and memes (ambulance jokes, donut jokes, etc.), how about the deaths of many important characters in the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure anime? Considering I don't read the manga and only watch the anime, those deaths catch my way off guard. Tho I do know what happens next season so that surprise isn't there To answer my own, L dying in Death Note when he did caught me off guard. Shirley dying in Code Geass was a shock since she was the love interest. Ace in One Piece for sure

I’ll go with Obi Wan icing Darth Maul on tattooine in Clone Wars. Maybe not the biggest suprise in who would win, but how quickly it came about in one graceful motion really hammered home the point that Obi Wan didn’t just call it a retirement but kept himself well trained and in a constant sharp mindset while watching over Luke.

Avatar: The Last Airbender {Spoiler}Jet People had died in the show before, but I think this was the first instance where a significant supporting character died in battle. It was all the more affecting because right before it happens, he remembers who he is and it's like his life is literally flashing before his eyes: the loss of his family, the enemies he wanted to face and take his vengeance from, the friends he made and the girl he had feelings for, everything he wanted to achieve. The next minute, he's laid out and left to die. It wasn't the biggest death in the grand scheme of things, but Aang and the group felt it and it's something that did send a ripple through the fanbase at the time.

But is it really worse than Mr. & Mrs. Pheasant? See I remember the hedgehogs. But I was reading about the series after posting and came up to the pheasant bit. That shits down deep in my deleted file. I remember vague images, but even now by memory is refusing to acknowledge it. Because holy hell, that is some Hostel nonsense. Mr. and Mrs. Pheasant somehow didn't stick to my memory as vividly as the Hedgehogs' death. Though it doesn't take away from Pheasants' death

As a kid I very nearly rented Felidae. Glad I didn't as it's basically Watership Downs more hardcore cousin.

Well that’s a suppressed, horrified memory from when I was about 6... gonna go stare into space while The Sound of Silence plays on loop in my head. But is it really worse than Mr. & Mrs. Pheasant? I think there's a generation of children who cried when Bold died. I know I did, I was six or so at the time. But yeah, early on in The Animals of Farthing Wood, they leave the shrews behind after they have babies. Then later on, Owl sees a Shrike eating a baby shrew so they return to where they left the family... to find the babies all dead and IMPALED on a thornbush waiting to be eaten by the bird. That's genuinely one of the most horrific things I've ever seen on TV, and it was for 6-10 year olds! Also Badger went from being the protector of the group, to dying of old age from something that looked very like dementia. Mr Pheasant, who had been annoying, chose death by cop because he was grief stricken. The bloody carp (though no one dies there). Mole dies off screen suddenly because moles have short lifespans. Brutal, brutal TV show. Yet we were all hooked at the time.

For some reason, the second scene that was burned into my mind of the show was Fox and Badger stuck in water, being approached by some sort of pile of trash. Somehow i found it very very scary

Goku's death in Dragonball Z.
Not having watched Dragon Ball, since Z came to Toonami first, it was surprising that the main character was killed off in the 5th episode.
