It's nice seeing players take the initiative to change their numbers if they want to. I also don't doubt there's going to be a new generation of players in a few years who want to wear either number to honor someone they thought of as a hero.

So there are reports saying that they were only twenty or thirty feet from clearing the mountain.
Just when you think it can't hurt anymore.

If a player wants to change their number to honor Kobe that's ok but I don't think the league should universally retire the numbers. In my opinion the only number in sports that should be universally retired is Jackie Robinson's 42.

Someone said it right yesterday and it so resonates with anyone who grew up loving basketball in the 2000's
Kobe's legacy is going to be a whole generation of basketball fans who crumbled up a ball of paper and before throwing it in the trash went "KOBE!"

I think people are too affected by their grief right now to think rationally about this. That rape allegation won't be whitewashed away, and I think it'd be a PR nightmare for the NBA to put Kobe as their new logo once the mourning period is over and people start using their brains more instead of their hearts again. Honestly, I think it will be whitewashed away. Much like the Michael Jackson rumors/allegations prior to his death. Kobe is/was so beloved that I doubt anyone can bring that allegation up, even after the mourning period ends, without facing huge backlash from fans/social media. On one hand, I agree it's not the time and place to be bringing this stuff up. Children died in that accident. There should be some level of respect shown here, and by all accounts Kobe turned his life around as he got older. However, 2003 happened, and it is part of his legacy. With that said, no one except Kobe and the accuser knows what really happened that night, and now one has passed and the other might as well be a ghost. Ultimately, whoever brings it up 24-48 hours after his death are doing so for promo, so they deserve whatever backlash they get as far as I'm concerned.

When my son told me first thing when I woke up Sunday, I thought he said “Daniel Bryant.”
Either way completely unreal.

As if TMZ couldn't get worse, they've just published photographs a hiker took of the crash.
I didn't click into it, because f*** TMZ, but the banner image for the article is clearly a photo that was taken moments after the crash. They're using a picture in which 9 people are either burning to death, or their bodies are burning after the crash killed them, for clicks.
This is such a scummy, bottom feeding behaviour I don't think there's even a word for it.

Condolences to the Byrants and all the families of all 9 victims.
Been processing this news slowly. From shock to sadness to logically thinking why it happened.
Will wait on the investigation but can't get my head round why his helicopter was given clearance to take off when the LAPD copters were grounded due to weather.

I also read they published he had died before families were notified by the proper authorities. Can't even imagine the rest of the world finding out before you when it comes to something like this

They said this happened 10 am LA time and news started spreading like 10:30. By 12, Woj was able to confirm it

TMZ may get the info out there, but it's not like they've ever had the reputation of respecting boundaries or anything. Still, it's a damn shame the families of all that died couldn't brace for it before it spread all over the news.

Has anyone been both totally polarizing and yet beloved as Kobe?

Has anyone been both totally polarizing and yet beloved as Kobe? Tons, TBH. *sigh..* I’ve kinda tried to let this go. Other than trying to fondly remember or positive thoughts. The TMZ thing and his family finding out via that doesn’t surprise me, unfortunately. I even wondered after finding out if that’s how his family would find out as well..Gotta be first, right? Been that way for a while now.

Has anyone been both totally polarizing and yet beloved as Kobe? Ray Lewis comes to mind, as a Ravens fan. This whole situation is just so incredibly sad. I'm just glad none of them suffered.

Been that way for a while now. I wouldn't say tons, but I also wouldn't put him at the top. LeBron will be the same way as Kobe when he retires. Nobody touches Mike Tyson on this to me though. Dude was an idiot and a rapist in his younger years, and now has finally found clarity after losing an infant and now he's this seemingly lovable pop culture character and boxing brand ambassador.

Still, it's a damn shame the families of all that died couldn't brace for it before it spread all over the news. Not exactly. "We dealt with Kobe's people for an hour before we published the story and we were told very clearly that [Vanessa] had been notified," Levin told KNX's In-Depth on Wednesday. "I got the tip initially from law enforcement," Levin explained. "Then we talked to Kobe's people and we were dealing with them for an hour before we published the story and they said, 'Go for it.' At a point we were all trying to confirm it and we confirmed it, but they all knew and they said, 'Go for it' and they said she knew." www.yahoo.com/entertainment/harvey-levin-defends-tmz-breaking-news-kobe-bryant-death-vanessa-notified-194808784.html

Hoping against hope that Kobe didn't big league his way to getting the copter to take off, but it's the most likely possibility.
