As tragic as his loss is, I don't think a league-wide retirement of 24 should happen. He only played for one team and he didn't mean to the NBA what Wayne Gretzky or Jackie Robinson did to their sports.

Ehhh I don't think it will happen but I have no problem teams unofficially retiring his jersey for a few years if they decide to do so. I don't think his number will be in the rafters like Jordan in Miami but the number probably won't be issued and I have no problem with that

The Vancouver Canucks don’t issue 28 or 11 to honor players that passed while with the team. They didn’t retire them because the players didn’t really warrant it. So they’re just not available.

Yea it is not going to be some official retirement, at least not for all the teams I can see it lasting for a few years

It's crazy that he'd already done more than most of us achieve in a lifetime, but there was still so much more he could, and would, have done - especially with his involvement in women's basketball.
And at least two children (Gianna and a friend) dying as well... I really feel for the families of those on the helicopter.

It's weird as f*** going on Kobe's Wikipedia page and seeing a "Death" section. Just unbelievable.

Jesus, BBC news on top form as usual. First using footage of Lebron James instead, then interviewing a friend and bringing up the allegation stuff at the end. Time and place.

The last recorded messages from the air control were how the helicopter was flying too low, so the crash must've happened because of a technical failure.

Just going to ask in this thread since I don't really know how the sport section works around here: if Kobe only played for the Lakers, which did he play with numbers 8 and 24?

From what I understand, he started with 8 because the number he wanted wasn’t available. He moved to 24 after the third championship win with the Lakers. 8x3=24.

What I was reading is they were flying low because they couldn't see, there is some speculation that what many think will be the result they discover is that without visibility they think there's a very good chance they just flew directly into one of the mountains.

Jesus, I woke up this morning thinking, "Did that really happen yesterday?" And I turn on SportsCenter to see it again. This is mind blowing.

Yea, a coach a wife and his daughter were killed A whole family gone, this whole thing is just tragic Just read the coach and wife had two other children, who are now orphans... just horrible. And there was a third 13 year old on the flight. I know everyone's life is important, but it hits harder when it's kids; their lives were only just starting.

And GiGi was on a track to be a phenomenal college and professional athlete. She would have been all over the sport and causes just like her dad. Devastating all around.

I was gutted all day yesterday, and my father (probably with the best of intentions) was being pragmatic in terms of saying Kobe had at least lived a great life. When we found out about his daughter..he was silent.

Yeah I think after the tears were gone if it was just Kobe and adults, people would have looked back celebrating like damn Kobe gone but he left this earth on his way to do what he loved which is be involved in basketball With all these people gone including his daughter, a whole family and other kids you just can’t escape how tragic it feels. This was a routine ride for them that unfortunately was their last. Kids never even got to get their life started.

What I wonder is HOW they were allowed to fly in the fog that was so bad that according to skip bayless the LAPD grounded all their helicopters.
If the fog was that bad surely there would have been some alert to ground any and all flights that obviously were not in an out of LAX.
It just feels so worse when thinking about things like this that you know could have been avoided or atleast believe it could have.
