I don't mean gimmick ,but literally same wrestler but as if he was a different person(Ex: Papa Shango going to a Pimp,Isaac to Kane being completely two different people)
It seems unless it is a mystery masked person(Suicide/Sin Cara) no matter where they go now they will always be the same person. But I think by the time of the attitude era it was already dead.Even if they change names
If Aaron Steven goes to NWA,people still recognize his achievments in WWE,so even if they change name and everything about then, it will always be a part of their character.

Happens in NXT all the time now.
Chelsea Green’s assistant is literally Robbie E.

I think EC3 was treated as a separate brand new person from Derrick Bateman in TNA. Damien Sandow was not acknowledged as his brief time as Idol Stevens on the main roster. It still happens from time to time.

Husky Harris to Bray Wyatt is probably the most contemporary example of this, though Bray did offer a token explanation when asked about it.

It still happens from time to time. EC3 is actually a great example of it that I forgot. I don't think even WWE mentioned Derrick Bateman right?(probably because they don't care about EC3,but I digress)

Age of the internet makes it way harder I think this is basically it. The internet made this a very difficult thing to pull off. Fans will come on board with it if they like it but otherwise you just can't get away with it.

Cause it's fun to chant their old name at them.

I don't think it's dead. Tensai springs to mind.

To my knowledge they’ve never acted like Johnny Curtis and Fandango were the same person.

I think the worst example was Albert to Lord Tensai?

I think the worst example was Albert to Lord Tensai? That was always hinted at as the same guy, maybe they even outright said so.
