I thought the WWE had the stupidest refs alive.
Am I alone in this?

Russo era TNA: "What about us?". Don't think Russo was around at that time, but I felt like posting that gif anyway.

The way they ref tag matches is so bad. I know refs are bad everywhere and the heels always take advantage but AEW refs will watch 3 heels beat down someone for 5 minutes then the face sticks his head through the ropes and they freak.
I know they always do across the industry, but AEW seems extra blatant.

Hell, they let that Jericho vs Moxley match go all over the arena without any countouts. The announcers put it over as "ref's discretion" but if they wanted to have that kind of match then it should have either been no-dq or they should have had the brawl around the arena before the match officially started.

Really depends on the ref. Like Aubrey will let things go for a bit until she gets sick of it and gets in their face. Then there is the one ref that looks barely awake the whole time or Knox who thinks tag matches are all tornado tag.

Aubrey's on top of things for the most part. Ref guy who isn't Knox or Bryce who reffed the Yuka/Riho vs Britt/Penelope match was a complete moron, but some of that is on whoever involved made the decision for Kip to literally just stand in the ring in front of the ref. That should have gotten him ejected immediately, since that's just indefensible.
Not arguing on the outside, not on the apron, standing slack-jawed in the ring with literally no plausible deniability. Eject them, or don't push it to that level.

Aubrey is an excellent ref, though the tag rules are poorly defined.
The others are garbage. And nothing gets you disqualified.

There's also Paul Turner, who used to be the other idiot ref for ROH.

Tag matches drive me insane. When the commentary is mentioning how long the 10 count is, you should probably change something

I like to think that VP's and Khan's has told refs that they're a fresh promotion and there's no room for bullcrap finishes that fans hate, like the ones that happen in WWE and UFC, so that's why there is so much leeway with countdowns and disqualifications.

AEW seems to be big on refs having more discretion to give some leeway like they do in New Japan. Problem is you don't really see that a whole lot in American wrestling. Anyone who's used to just watching WWE where refs are expected to be strictly by-the-book are going to be thrown off.
But yeah, it says a lot that the only disqualification so far in the company's history has been in an Iron Man match. Nothing wrong with a DQ or count-out finish every once in awhile, just don't devolve into late era WCW or current WWE by overusing it.

I particularly enjoyed when Luther hit Sonny Kiss with the ring bell in full view of the referee who did nothing (it was a normal match as far as I could tell) and then rolled in and out of the ring to break up a 10 - count !

It needs to happen max once a year and only 'cause they are about to build huge story around match not ending like everyone wanted and make a huge match out of it. The day when they just start to do disqualifications just 'cause someone interfered is going to be day they dug up their grave. AEW's biggest selling point for me is that they'll deliver what they advertise.

Yeah it’s totally their we don’t want matches to end in DQs, so refs really have to be dumb as possible.
But know you get so much interference that the matches aren’t clean to begin with so a dq or count out would be fine once in a while.
As long as it’s not WWE overused trope of distraction followed by a robot it will be okay,

I liked Aubrey letting the Jericho/Mox match start out with a crazy brawl. It makes sense when it's a huge match like that that's obviously going to be heated.

Just finished Jericho vs Kazarian.
Inner Circle was on the apron, Hager held on to Kazarian's legs from outside, right in front of Aubrey (I literally yelled at the TV calling her a stupid bitch) and her response was pretty much a stern finger.
It was like watching a high school teacher dealing with bullies, and about as effective.
I barely bother with Inner Circle anymore.
Sorry for the thread bump, but damn.
