Everyone remembers the Gambler, but I remember a weird video that he had where he was abducted by aliens or something that for some reason was played on repeat on one of the country channels when I was a kid. Late 80s/early 90s era. Anyone else remember this? This did happen, correct? RIP. Planet Texas! Good memory! For my part... And somewhere, in the night... the gambler, he broke even... I just cannot sum up Kenny Rogers better than that. I personally believe he’s one of the most underrated music acts out there, giving steroids to country music in the 80s. He will also always be my favorite, fun and joyful, deep and soulful. The way country should be. Rest well, Gambler. You did good.

I knew him as one of the most ubiquitous country singers of my childhood, and then when I was older, I discovered his earlier, more psychedelic stuff. He had a great, instantly recognizable voice, and his songs told vivid, memorable stories.

This was my introduction to Kenny Rogers, in 1979. I was 4.
This became my favorite song for at least the next 5 or 6 years. I even performed it in the school talent show in 2nd grade.
RIP, Kenny.

I really don't know where to start on a favorite of mine. The Gambler and Coward of the County are both excellent answers of course, I have a lot of love for Lucille, Don't Fall in Love With a Dreamer is great, Love Will Turn You Around, Buy Me a Rose, Islands in the Stream, Love or Something Like It, there's no shortage of great options.

Loved him on Reno 9-1-1, and Garcia's insistence that he give up music to act more. lol

I hope, really do hope, when the current crisis passes, he gets some sort of gathering or celebration of his life. He was so significant, he deserves nothing more or less. Meantime, it’s funny how much hearing his voice right now is helping. Isn’t it?

A local radio station plays old Casey Kasem American Top 40's, which jumps thru the '70s and '80s based on original old air dates and whatever the date is on Sat/Sun, and I SWEAR TO YOU within an hour of reading this news on Saturday morning that episode (from the mid '80s) played a Kenny Rogers song.

One of the things about Kenny Rogers that makes me a fan of many of his songs is that despite how rooted in country they are, they're also very relatable to almost anyone. For example Coward of the County. That's a story that could take place in any walk of life, in just about any place. It's a story that isn't specifically "country". IMO its just part of the reason his songs had such crossover success, and resonated with many people. Obviously it also was because of his talent, and charisma. So while I'm not a fan of most country music, I am a fan of Kenny Rogers. Thanks for memories Gambler.
