SNES Mortal Kombat is doubly infamous for being so heavily censored. The blood is replaced with “sweat”, and Fatalities are done away with neutered versions called “Finishing Bonuses”.

Both Manhunt games. There was a bunch of controversy surrounding both of them. Hell, I even heard that the second game was initially rated AO because of the executions, until there was some edits made with the animations.

Mortal Kombat for making the ESRB rating.
Super Mario for bringing home gaming into relevance.
Pong for pretty much starting video gaming period.
Grand Theft Auto for open sandbox storyline games.
The Guy Game for having a nude minor in the game.
Duke Nukem Forever for being in development hell for YEARS and being a stinker when it finally did release.
WWE 2K20 for being super buggy at launch after the series has been around since 2000.

Mass Effect 3 and Andromeda killed a franchise. I don't think Mass Effect Andromeda is infamous. That one-second clip of a character smiling is infamous.

Mass Effect 3 and Andromeda killed a franchise. EA's meddling killed a franchise. Andromeda really isn't that bad.

I can see why it'd be considered controversial, but Spec Ops: The Line was an excellent deconstruction of military shooters and the black-and-white nature of their narratives. It took some real big risks with its story, and I think it paid off without feeling cheap. I disagree... I found it extremely cheap... because... you had to do all the messed up things to continue playing the game. it goes off on well why did you do this?! on things... without giving you another way to progress without doing it. If they actually had the choice of using or not using the excessive force (making it harder to take the non excessive force for instance) I would have found it a far better execution of the idea. as it is... it's basically talking about how terrible you are for doing things when there was no option.

Yea, that's one of those games that is built to have you look at all these consequences the first time around but a 2nd playthrough shows you really had no choice If they had a branching path, sure it would been nice to see two sides of the line but they built the game for one narrative

The weakness of the writing and the characters was unforgivable, as was the one-dimensional, boring villain. And the aliens could have been played by blokes in suits. The graphics can (and were for the most part fixed), the terrible writing and characters not so. After 99% of ME3 being awesome (and yes the ending does ruin it for me) Andromeda was such a bloody letdown.

Pokemon X and Y are considered the weakest mainline games. Due to the linear region, lack of post game, poorly developed characters and the amount of loose ends and plot holes that have never been tied up. The fact that they followed the amazing Black 2 and White 2 games made them look worse.

There were a few bits in ME3 that I really dislike besides the ending where I think the writing slipped like making big choices that we were assured were going to mean something well... not. Characters that were an integral part of the last game basically being reduced to cameos... and well the ending (even with the extended cut) being literally what they said it wasn't going to be for like 6 straight years. But... that said while I generally call Andromeda "ok" which in a series of great to good games like Mass Effect is pretty damning... and the main issue are how poorly underwritten it is... not to mention it uses a twist that Bioware had already used like 2 times before.

Bully, for all the controversy it created in the build-up to its release, though it dies down once people saw what was actually in the game.
San Andreas could be considered infamous for the Hot Coffee mod. Initially the game didn’t get as much negative press as it’s predecessors as by this time people expected a GTA game to be violent. But they didn’t expect this level of sexual material, so the anti-game crowd cane back with a vengeance.
Right or wrong, Doom will go down as representative of the anti-game controversy arising after Columbine, and will always be tied to that event.

It became infamous before it was released because of the memes. Personally, I thought the characters were pretty good and the writing was fine, but trying to make things open world was a terrible idea, and I agree they did not at all use the new setting to be super-creative with the aliens and villains (although I think many of the same fans who dislike that would have turned around and mocked them for being wacky if they'd tried).

Andromeda is infamous because it was released as a buggy broken mess.
The memes came from it being that.
