Not sure I agree. Ace turned into a useful, reliable worker. At least in a tag setting--I've seen a lot of acclaimed tag matches where Ace is involved and while he's never the focal point or best worker of the match, I've never come away from viewing a ****+ tag thinking, "That was good in spite of Johnny Ace" or "They did a good job of masking Ace there." He held his own, and sometimes that's enough.

There were a number of North American wrestlers who had pretty bad (some notoriously awful) runs in either WCW or the WWF in the nineties who were pretty successful on the European and British circuit before or after their runs in the States. The most notable ones I can think of are Rambo (Sniper in the Truth Commission), who held the Catch Wrestling Association title a few times, Bruiser Mastino (AKA Mantaur), and PN News, who carved out a long career on this side of the Atlantic and was still working in mainland Europe and for All-Star in the UK until a few years ago as the American Avalanche and Cannonball Grizzly.

Johnny the Bull/Stamboli. Not that he had a long run in Japan but he did get a small main event run in All Japan as the Fake Great Muta and then as a founding member of Voodoo Murders. I once heard a story about his name spelled backwards being something?

Hansen is very much still a household name in Japan, even among non wrestling fans. He’s the go to example on TV in terms of foreign wrestlers.

Granted it was due to a rape conviction but Art Barr had to dig out his passport from the back of the sock drawer in order to prolong his career.
