She was decent at a time when most WWE women's wrestlers sucked.
Also, she was really hot which made a bunch of nerds (including myself) have a crush on her.

I have so many mixed feelings about AJ Lee to be honest. And I think that’s fair, because there are a lot of complexities to her and her character. I think she was unfortunate to have come up when she did, just before the big women’s boom in WWE, and I think she was mostly good in everything she was given. I think the “pipebombshell” was truly awful and the kind of shit that only hurts the division instead of making it better.
The fan base around here during her run was super toxic as well, and there was certainly some weirdness associated with that.
I don’t think she measures up talent-wise to a lot of the women currently around, but if she were to train in this same era with them, coupled with her desire to be a top women’s wrestler, I think she’d be great in 2020.

AJ Lee walked so the current women could run. That’s the best way I can put it.

I may be the minority here but I think she'd be vastly outclassed in terms of in ring ability in today's landscape For her time, she was good in a sea of mostly bad. Ironically the Bellas, who she famously ran down in her promo, managed to outshine her in the end Eh I will disagree with that.AJ Lee shined much more and having less time than The Bellas. I think people will underate her because of who she had to work. Which is funny because she was definitely overrated due of who she had to work even if she was really good.

AJ doesn't have as much of a legacy as she should mainly because WWE almost immediately erased her from the history books and attributed her achievements to Stephanie McMahon and the Bellas. But she's still an important part of women's wrestling history in the WWE and would definitely still be a star now due to her charisma and mic skills.

She's involve in one of my favorite bits of WWE backstage nonsense.
They told AJ Lee, who I honestly think is one of the most attractive women they've ever had, that no one would be attracted to her.
AJ Lee.

To be fair people are saying she'd be outclassed now, but she was as good as she was at a time where WWE didn't give winen proper training, just wanted cat fight matches and she has hardly any people to work with who could help her raise her game
I dont think I remember any great matches of hers or Beth Phoenix, but they are two wrestlers who would have thrived in the current environment
Melinda too, especially as (hopefully) the bullying of her wouldnt have been as tolerated now
But back to AJ, I was a big fan and her stuff probably kept me around for a few extra months. Didnt care as much for her as an authority figure though

AJ Lee.To be fair, Vince had to be convinced that people could be attracted to Asian women. And when you look at that alongside Johnny Ace’s casting couch bullshit, you’ll realize all that “gotta be white, blonde, leggy with big fake tits” talk was the popular belief of the people who told her that, who I’m sure were stuck in 1996 on the “one way to be attractive” deal.

Yeah that's what makes her hard to judge, she hit the glass ceiling at the time so there no way to know how far she could have gone now that's been removed (/raised).

Her legacy is the modern women's division. If she had not publically shamed Stephanie for her opportunistic lip service feminism, leaping on the bandwagon after a decade in charge of creative and doing a grand total of nothing to help, nothing would have changed. Experiencd womens wrestlers would be expected to carry models to passable matches in the lower midcard while being paid less than men doing the same work, getting depushed if they get ideas above their station.
She spoke out while under contract, something very few are willing to do, that's her legacy.

I wanted to bring up but I assumed the idea was about the in-character and didnt want to end up sidetracking, but you are right ,that is much more important than any in-ring legacy.

She was also one of Vin e’s pet projects that I personally got worn out on. The AJ vs a Total Divas and AJ vs Paige programs were all terrible, in no small part because she was booked so dominantly even though she was a heel-or at least trying to be most of the time.

I just wanted to throw in that I had never been prouder of a fan base when #AJALL won one of the online polls during the show. Yes, I know the implications and all that and it is not the greatest thing in the world but when you’re used to fans voting wrongly in online polls (We could have had Dude Love vs. Carlito, YOU DUMB MOTHER F***ERS!), the small victories feel more important. Never forget.

I remember most people finding her really irritating & wishing she wouldn’t take up so much of the show.
