f*** his awful WWE theme song too. They had that awesome orchestral version of his WCW theme in the video game commercial, and then gave us that crap. I love taiko drums as much as the next guy but they were a baffling choice for his Mania entrance. Yeah, I didn't get that at all. They must've had the rights to Sting's WCW music or they wouldn't have used it in that commercial. Why not use it for his WWE run? That's one of the classics.

I don't blame the WWE for the injury, but I do blame them for the booking.
Taker and Sting was RIGHT THERE. I don't even care if the match went to a screwy finish, people wanted Sting and Taker to face off.
As for Sting in AEW... I really don't want him in the ring. I just don't. Nothing to really gain. Make him the commissioner, or something. People love beloved babyfaces in authority roles.

It basically confirmed why he was reluctant to go there in the first place.

Problem with Taker-Sting is that it simply sounds like Taker never wanted it. Sting even bumped into him at an airport one time and in discussing it Taker was apparently very non-committal. I suppose Vince could've tried strong-arming him into doing it, but, that's guaranteeing a less than motivated Taker and not a good way to treat him.
Sting's WWE run was a very mixed bag. I disagree when it gets written off at horrible, but it wasn't what it could've been and circumstances made it lacklustre.
I'm grateful for the pros - the Survivor Series appearance, joining Orton to fight off the Authority with a bat like the old nWo days, getting to perform at a WrestleMania in front of around 70,000 people, the statue reveal angle, and at 56 years of age working damn hard in having a genuinely good match against Rollins. Add in the Hall of Fame Induction and getting a ton of attention on his WCW work again.
But I didn't like the Hunter match and the outcome particularly left a sour taste, and the feeling that if it had all happened even just four or five years before it would've been a much more capable Sting. And despite his huge professionalism in finishing the match, the injury against Rollins really sucked.
It's worth pointing out that he got himself into commendable shape for the Rollins match and the plan was for more matches to come. It wasn't supposed to end there. But, fate played its hand there.

Probably, and this is speculation, Vince felt it didn't work because it didn't have an opening hook to it (see "Time To Play The Game", Glass Shattering, "If You Smell What the Rock is Cooking"...hell, they even added the static effect to Cult of Personality for Punk). I mean, you COULD have added the crows to the start of the WCW Crow Sting theme, but I could have seen complaints about that happening too.

He should have never joined WWE.
Said it back then, still saying it now.
The only appeal for him to join WWE was to do Taker/Sting. And they couldn't even do that.

Honestly I understand where they were coming from on the Triple H thing. It made sense to do it because there was really no way of knowing if Sting was actually going to be workable for being against Taker, given how broken down he was in TNA and how broken down Taker was by that point, so it made sense to put him with someone who could lead the way, and by all accounts, at the time Sting was only signed for the one match. With them positioning for the Rock and Ronda thing it made sense to have Triple H win to set that up, particularly since Triple H hadn't won a match in a couple of years.

No.
He was ancient and broken when he got there. He is still ancient and broken now, possibly more so.
Being a legend doesnt suddenly mean he'll be able to have another great run.
It just means he's another old and broken star stealing time from making new ones. His WWE run was 10 years too late.
Anything more now is even later.

Yeah they used him horribly. I mean there's no other answer. It didn't feel like Sting, it felt like a midcarder wearing Sting's clothing. Ok you got me. Busted. It was me all along.

The good 1. Incredible debut 2. It's a picture of Sting 3. The return when he was on the statue podium
The bad 1. Loss to Triple H 2. Injury
Eh, I think his WWE run was much better than people say it is.

I have to say, I am an apologist for this angle. I think they debuted him amazingly. I think the buildup with Triple H was actually pretty good, confronting each other at the PPV but not even needing to use words - the rare example of the correctly applied Mania sign point - and the bit where Sting was hiding instead of the statue. I liked that gimmick. They had Sting have some short matches on Raw; at least this way he was in the books. Sting cut some good promos, that I liked. I think the Triple H/Sting match was actually fine, Sting didn't need to win it, he's 400 years old, and the nWo vs. DX stuff was the perfect kind of kayfabe-shattering nonsense that I pay money to watch Mania for. My only real issue with it was the handshake afterwards. And I would have liked Sting to win, but come on, does he need to get over? Then he had a match with Rollins that was going to be good until Sting broke his neck. So yeah, I think people are a little bit too harsh on the run. And yes, they did Sting dirty. It was f***ing horrible. It was miraculous it had this much good in it. I love Sting. I even defend Joker Sting, lads, don't trust me on anything. This was an absolute joke. You had four Sting matches to use and you have him being given f***ing BUCKLE BOMBS and wrestling Big Show? What is with WWE bringing back people for part time runs and putting them in f***ing rematches???

Not really. Never really got the appeal of Sting. So I was fine with it. Shouldn’t have lost to Triple H though, but that just makes him part of a massive club of ex-WCW guys like Booker T, Goldberg, RVD (I’m counting Robbie V!) and more guys I’m forgetting. Steiner would be in the list had he not SUCKED in WWE.

Sting is my favorite wrestler of all time and I almost always defend him to the death. His debut was awesome... aside from. The fact he looked way out of shape. By the time they started building towards Mania he looked much better.
He should not have out to Triple H. Aside from that who knows what could have happened had he not gotten injured.
If nothing else I will say the one thing for sure squandered was they gave him an awful entrance theme... but that also may be me saying that in light of his awesome AEW entrance

His booking was incompetent, but I'd stop short of calling it malevolent. What they used him for was kind of inexplicable, and then HHH had to go over him on the biggest stage, which whether Sting was ok with it or not was absolutely f***ing ridiculous.
Basically I think Sting's concerns about how WWE would use him if he'd signed after WCW folded were shown to be extremely well founded, and going to TNA was the right call.

I feel like up until 2016 there's a common link in feeling like someone's being squandered in WWE and them having lost to Triple H.

We could have had Sting VS The Undertaker at WrestleMania.
Instead, he jobbed to Triple H and got a completely avoidable neck injury that ended his career.
Yeah, they squandered him just like they squandered The Streak, The Invasion, and all those other WCW guys.
