Stretching "celebrity" here a bit, and he'd roll his eyes at me including him in this, but Stuart Ashen is a doctor of psychology, though he's never practiced.

I'd say more celebrities than not have graduated college or even higher levels of higher education. Gervais is just a schmuck.

Off the top of my head.. John Cleese Graham Chapman Eric Idle Terry Jones Terry Gilliam Michael Palin Stephen Fry Hugh Laurie Emma Thompson Clive Anderson Richard Ayoade David Mitchell Robert Webb Olivia Colman David Baddiel Chris Morris Bob Mortimer Stephen Merchant Jim Broadbent Hugh Grant A hefty chunk of British comedians in general really, as evidenced by the influence of the Cambridge Footlights, and that particular establishment being lampooned in the Young Ones by comics who didn't go to Cambridge.
It pains me to say it because I like so many comedians produced by the Footlights, but it's quite indicative of the levels of insularity and rank elitism that are prevalent in the British entertainment industry.

I remember hearing an interview between Richard Herring and David Baddiel (who went to Oxford and Cambridge respectively) about how their education helped or hindered their careers. Baddiel said he rung up Comedy Clubs looking for an open spot. When he said he had been part of the Footlights, they turned him down as they were tired of those kind of comedians. He rang back later and put on a fake accent, he never mentioned Footlights and got a spot easily. This would have been around 1986/7, so it’s surprising how quickly attitudes in comedy stores were changing.

Yeah, I suppose by then the Footlights/Oxbridge comedy was unfashionable and alternative comedy was vogue. I do wonder a bit if things are going back the other way, because Footlights alumni and privileged upper-middle class entertainers in general are becoming more prevalent again.

On a forum where “politics” was allowed, I might point out that the return to privileged/ umc entertainers becoming more prevalent again maps on to cuts for funding community arts, and to the introduction of universal credit, meaning non-rich folks trying to be artists can’t support themselves. But I probably wouldn’t post that here.

And the role played by the skyrocketing cost of living, and gentrification of traditional creative hubs that make them inaccessible for anyone not already independently very wealthy.
We're at the point where there are literal aristocrats who are now relatively prominent entertainers and broadcasters. It's nuts.
