Doug Naylor, co-creator of Red Dwarf, was removed from Grant Naylor Productions in March of 2020, with the company then informing UKTV that he had 'resigned' and that all rights to the programme were firmly in their lap. Naylor is suing to try and get the rights back, as well as an unpaid invoice sum totalling ££160,096.80 www.ganymede.tv/2021/02/take-the-fifth-2/Craig Charles did confirm that work was due to begin on a new Red Dwarf special this year, so whether or not that means Rob Grant is finally taking the reins as writer again isn't known at this point.

Not sure how they'll work in tandem albeit completely separately but at least the show can have more episodes if they so wish.
Both writers however are better off writing together, it's a shame they can't get along and write again. S3-6 was peak RD, the quality certainly dipped when Grant walked imo

I think it's obvious what the separate iterations should be
UK Vs Red Dwarf US
Which one would Patrick Stewart sue?

Want to be excited about this but if they're just doing seperate stuff, I just remember that with their seperate books that span off from the first two, Doug Naylor took things off in a very different direction with Rimmer getting an actual conclusion to his arc, and Rob Grant wound up with a copout not-quite-status-quo ending where after Rimmer and Kryten are killed off, they say 'Let's just have Lister and Cat hop to a dimension where they died instead'.
And thats before we get to the laundry list of transphobes that Grant follows on Twitter.

This feels like when some aging band has two different versions touring. It’s weird then, so I can’t imagine how weird it’ll be with a TV series.

As part of Naylor's reinstatement, the other directors of Grant Naylor Productions (Paul Jackson and Lesley Armitage) have resigned. Grant and Naylor are now the only active directors.

Honestly, I'd take a hard pass on this idea. Rob's work has been uniformly awful ever since he and Doug dissolved their partnership, and the Backwards novel seemed particularly mean-spirited. It'll probably only be a radio production, as that seems to be where Rob has found the most success in the past 20 years, but either way I'm not hopeful it'll be any good.

Oh wow, Red Dwarf without the actors who brought the characters to life or the setting that made their dysfunctional dynamics fascinating?
Like, the segments in the book aren't a particularly interesting story for Rimmer and Lister, it's Lister driving a taxi and Rimmer having a bad time at a brothel, an excuse to put in something that happens before the first episode since they had space to expand it. It's only really remembered fondly for the fun little worldbuilding background details, like the drug that gets you addicted by looking at it, making drug raids very difficult. And that's a thing that's fun to read for a paragraph, not a whole series?

And that's a thing that's fun to read for a paragraph, not a whole series? You could probably make a fun little show about Lister's adventures running a stolen taxi on Titan if you expand the cast of regular characters to more than just Lister and not be too picky about sticking to the backstory laid out in the novel. Shoehorning Rimmer into the story when there's really no reason to just wouldn't work. Or just make Taxi in Space, with Lister as a secondary character.

Personal favourite is Faust which has two iterations touring and releasing albums with half the original lineup each

Honestly all this news is just making me want to see Big Finish do a Doctor Who/Red Dwarf crossover. Its arguably more practical as an audio box set than TV special anyway.
