Some douchebag somehow got my card number and ran up huge charges. He paid 1,700 for something and 600 for another. I had to cancel my card and add fraud alerts to my credit report. oh man thats horrible...did you use your credit card online? I am very concerned all the time with the companies I give my information too. When things like this happen what action is taken? Do they actually force you to pay if they dont find the culprit or is it stricken from the record?

They just cancel the card and the charges and issue you a new one. At least Citibank does. But I don't know how much more credit they tried to take out in my name, which could ruin my real credit if I didn't get on it.

That's why I stick with those reloadable debit cards you can get at the store.
Sucks that that happened, bro. You call the card provider to see if any of that can be recovered, and if they found the guy?

Same thing happened to my parents. Except they found out themselves rather than the bank call them. It was Victoria Secret stuff sent to Colombia. Obviously it wasn't them. We're not from there or know anyone who lives there. The card was set up with a different signature to that of my dads and had an address from Staten Island. The company still wanted my parents to pay for it but they refused. Not sure what happened but i don't think they paid.

Someone got a hold of our number and started ordering training courses on-line. We caught them and got a refund, but if I ever find that guy, he's in for some serious bustafazoo.

That sucks. I had a problem with my card one time, as there was a purchase of $80.00 which I never made. After some work, the company found out it was an error they made when inputting the transaction. If you have a good credit record and something like this comes up, usually banks will give you the benefit of the doubt. My advice would be to get one of those packages the credit card companies provide that protects you from fraud. It's probably $10.00 a month or something like that, depending on your service, but in the long run, it will help in cases like this, especially if you purchase stuff online.
There's nothing that annoys me more than credit card fraud. I just want to kill those people.

I should also add that since it was our debit card, we had to completely get a new checking account. SERIOUS bustafazoo.

I had an internet porn site try to bill me about $400 dollars. I told them to blow it out their rear. They sent me to a collections agency. By this time I had searched my computer and found the virus that the site used to "hook" me up to their site. I told the collection agency what I had found, and they willingly closed the account. They warned me that the site might still send it to another company, but they did give me advice on which government agencies to contact about it. I reported them, and 3 years later I still have not heard from those con artists again.
I also had a friend whose debit card was highjacked to buy $500 worth of cell phone stuff at a Cingular store. This of course caused every check he wrote that month to bounce, leading to about $450 of overdraft fees from the bank.
It took him a solid 5 weeks of having absolutely no money (his checks were automatically deposited, and this money was eaten up almost instantaneously by the daily negative balance fees), he got the bank to close his account, pay off the checks that he actually wrote, and cleared up all negative reports so that he could get an account with another bank.
The bank only did this after he was able to show the police that it was impossible for it to have been him that bought the cell phone stuff. This was because he had used his card to buy gas about 30 minutes after the fraudulent charges were made. The thing was, he got his gas right before work in Jasper, IN while the cell phone stuff was bought in Louisville, KY (a measly HOUR AND A HALF AWAY!!!!). The thing was, he tried to show that to the bank 3 days after the charges when he found out about it in the first place, but the middle management refused to listen to him and made all sorts of threats. Talking to the police got the attention of the bank's manager, who had the gall to ask him if he wanted to start up a new account with them.

My bank was real cool about it. they knew from my past charges that I have never bought anything that expensive before.

Reminds me of the time an old roomate took my debit card out of my pants, used his criminal friends to get the PIN, sold it and clean it out........

Same thing happened to me, even though I rarely ever use my credit card, and I only use it at reputable places (i.e. Ebay, Paypal, etc). I didn't have any trojans or spyware on my system; I clean it regularly, and actually work as a computer tech, so I'm very confident that there wasn't much that I could have done that I wasn't already doing.
Someone from the Netherlands charged $300 for an airplane ticket to my account. I called Visa, they launched an investigation, and within 2 weeks, the charges were dropped.
You know why? The $300 plane ticket charge DIDN'T HAVE MY SIGNATURE ON IT.
So I wouldn't worry about it to much, as long as you're proactive and keep in touch with your credit card company.
You probably shouldn't blame yourself; it happened to me, despite the fact that I used my card less than a dozen times that year, and only with reputable dealers.
