Make the relationship mean something more by only allowing him three wishes, where he uses one per season. Of course, you can only have 3 seasons with that premise.

I think you could make it work... make it more abundantly clear that Jeannie is there because she wants to be, and you know have the Major be a massive creep or anything with her. Will there be any interest in a reboot/remake/whatever that's the harder question... and honestly my guess is probably no. It'd be hard to make it work as well. Peter Falk brought so much to the character that someone doing it again is going to have to add their own stuff so it isn't just a copy. Columbo's an odd case where the actor defined the character more than anything else. Right, he literally changed certain aspects or brought some of his own, like the coat being one he brought himself. He's doable, but you would need to do it with care to not just seem like a shitty Halloween costume and not an actual living, breathing character. Yeah, I'm not sure how you'd do it... do you lean into the character from the original play more to try and make him as different from Falk's take... or do you lean more into Falk's portrayal and risk being a bad imitator... or do you try to play somewhere in the middle. All 3 have their issues.

I just someone to bring back Columbo. I was about to post about the absence of the "mystery" of the week type shows then I remembered the millions of CSI and Law and Order shows we have now. I love NCIS but that show taught me that approximately 200 members of the Navy die under mysterious circumstances every year.

Just like how Midsomer averaged like 2 murders a week for 21 years and yet people still live there >_>

I think you could do it while sidestepping some of the issues surrounding it so long as you handled it well, either through framing her devotion as an issue or by showing that it's not something she feels compelled to do but rather just wants to do. Having a strong supporting cast of women with their own things going on that don't fall into the same roles would help a lot with making it clear that it isn't a, "Get in the kitchen, woman," thing. ... Honestly it's occurring to me that if you want the same basic idea but with a gender-flipped Tony, that's basically Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid. I believe the creators of some of the first harem anime’s actually cited Jeannie and Bewitched as influences

No matter what you’ve heard, stroking the big screen at Sears counts as feeling up Barbara Eden.

as long as they don't go the direction of the Bewitched movie and I wouldn't have a problem I genuinely loved the premise of the movie, it was clever and more imaginative than most remakes. The end result could've been better, but I didn't hate it either. Alas, seemingly I was the only one.

Considering we got a remake (albiet gender-flipped) of the already problematic Overboard (that film where a guy convinces a girl with amnesia that he's her husband), I dont think any remake is off the table.

What a reboot would really be about:

There would also be the issue of casting and wardrobe. Do you cast a white woman and have her in Middle Eastern (Persian?) garb and have people cry cultural appropriation or do you cast a person of color and have people complain it's a negative cultural stereotype? Choose your poison.

Choose your poison. Fun factoid: That style of outfit was actually made up by thirsty British artists, but then actual dancers back-imported it into Iran because it was so popular. So technically it's British. That being said, "genies" aren't really considered to belong to one area even though technically djinn are an Arabian myth (in fact, Aladdin was originally set in China, "China" being sort of a default "exotic place far away" for people at the time). I doubt there'd be much of a problem due to that. As always, casting more than one POC in different roles would do a lot to insulate against charges of negative stereotyping.

As long as her belly button isn't visible, should be just fine. It’s so bizarre how people used to get offended from one of the weirdest parts of the human body.

I Dream of Jeannie (the NBC 1965-1970 television sitcom starring Barbara Eden, Larry Hagman, Bill Daily and Hayden Rorke) is by far, one of the greatest American television sitcoms that has ever been created.
I'm proud to say that I watched and enjoyed all 139 episodes of I Dream of Jeannie.
There definitely shouldn't ever be a prequel, remake, or reboot of I Dream of Jeannie. None of the American television sitcoms from the 21st Century are any good.
But, there are tons and tons of great American television sitcoms from the 1950's, 1960's, 1970's and 1980's combined for me to continue to enjoy.

This is possibly mildly political and racial, I apologize in advance if this breaks any rules. The thing with I Dream of Jeannie, and similar "hide the fantastic abilities" shows of its time (Bewitched, My Favorite Martian, Mister Ed, etc.) is that they seemed to be reflections of your average suburban white families opinions of the Civil Rights movement of the time. A whole don't make waves/hide in plain sight. As the decades marched on, this kind of thinking gave way to more of an opinion that people shouldn't hide their diversity to fit in, but respect and celebrate it. This is basically the prevailing line of thought that the bulk of society has today. So to do a show like this in todays environment, regardless of gender of either master or genie, where a supremely powerful being is told to keep their abilities a secret and stay hidden to "fit in" I don't think would pass mustard nowadays. Just too many issues with it. I think you can easily spin that with the "with great power comes great responsibility" narrative. She only is hiding who she is because in a realistic scenario people would be afraid and she would have government agents breathing down her neck. Not so much, "hide who you are" but "protect yourself and others around you".

I am now thinking of when the Djinn was on What We Do In The Shadows, and Nandor tried to change the course of his life by using his wishes.
Someone above mentioned have each season have a dilemma, and Major Nelson has a limited number of wishes to make a difference. Season finales could be the outcome of a certain wish, or a cliffhanger where something happens and he has to weigh the consequences of using a wish.
