linkWhether you liked his style or not, no one did the Rock ballad quite like Steinman. You could tell it was him after hearing about two seconds of one of his songs. RIP

He wrote I'd Do Anything For Love.
If he did nothing else ever, he would be deserve to be honored for that alone.

I'm absolutely devastated. Been a huge fan of him throughout my life. My first introduction to him was probably my dad playing me Bat Out Of Hell, but I properly got obsessed with his music in my teens when my friend Manny introduced me to Pandora's Box and the song 'The Future Just Ain't What It Used To Be', and I fell down the rabbit hole of Jim's lesser known side projects, beyond the big hits like Total Eclipse and Bat, and ended up listening to and reading the scripts of Neverland and The Dream Engine. And the ideas behind those projects became Bat Out Of Hell: The Musical. I saw it on its third day open in Manchester, and ended up seeing it an additional 34 times, in two theatres in London, one in Oberhausen and one in New York, and I'm still just as obsessed. And through it I found some of my best friends, my chosen family, and partner even. For that I'll be forever indebted to him.
He left behind an amazing legacy, to the point where even the people who don't know his name will know of songs like Bat Out Of Hell, Total Eclipse Of The Heart, Holding Out For A Hero, etc. To have any one of those hits would be enough to immortalise a writer, but the stuff he did beyond that, the narrative and world he created for these musical children to live in, the city of Obsidian, that's what makes him go beyond a writer/producer of hits and into being one of the greatest musical minds not only of our generation but of all time. Someone who lived by the principle that too much was never enough. And I'm grateful that I got to spend 30 years living in the same time as such a brilliant mind, and even once had the surreal experience of posting on a Facebook thread about Bat musical lore and having him chip in.
He'll be sorely missed, and while in his words 'forever is such a long long time, and most of it hasn't even happened yet', I feel confident in saying his works will live on forever. Saying 'Rest In Peace' feels inappropriate somehow, I much prefer to imagine him busting like a sinner through the gates of heaven on a flaming motorcycle and making whatever afterlife there may be a bit more rock and roll. Godspeed, Jim.

He wrote Hulk Hogan's 1st original theme in the WWF. Which he would then recycle as "Ravishing" for Bonnie Tyler.
RIP.

No one was better at writing tremendously epic rock songs. Total Eclipse of the Heart my personal favorite.

Meat Loaf, and by extension Jim Steinman, were responsible for turning me into a metalhead when I was 15. My dad had a copy of Bat Out of Hell in his CD case and I played it on loop for literal months. I tried to find more albums at Walmart and happened upon Metallica in the same section, and it just blew up from there. His music will always hold a special place in my heart.
RIP Mr. Steinman.

I knew and liked Steinman's work for a long time, but it wasn't until I got into The Protomen and learned how much of Act II was inspired by Steinman's work that I really delved into his and Meat Loaf's catalogue and really fell in love with his music. RIP to an absolute legend.

Relatively new here but just wanted to say that Jim Steinman’s music has been the biggest influence in my life since I was a young child.
His music aside, which I could talk about for days, much like Gwen (hey Gwen, small world!) I’ve made some amazing friends through the Steinman community and it’s even opened me up to career opportunities and roads I never thought possible.
Through the darkest moment and the greatest joys, Jim’s music has always been there for me. Godspeed Jim.

I was today years old when I realized this one man was responsible for some of my favorite songs. Without a lie, Total Eclipse of The Heart, I Would Do Anything For Love and It’s All Coming Back to Me are back to back to back on my favorites play list and I had no idea. Holding On For a Hero too. This man WAS the master of the power ballad and I cannot imagine a life or a world without the lyrics this man wrote.
Needless to say, I’m devastated. But the music goes on forever, thank goodness.

Having been a member of the New York City Rocky Horror Picture Show cast from 2005-2008 (Steinman was not a part of film, I do know that) we loved Meat Loaf, and thus Jim Steinman, and we would incorporate a lot of his stuff into performance ideas and concepts. Truly a legend who no one can replicate. I still can't listen to Loaf's version of "It's All Coming Back To Me" without shedding a tear, and now even more so. Rock in Peace, Jim.

His songs mostly sound exactly the same to me.
And yet, that's not a problem, because they're amazing.
(My favorite is probably "Nowhere Fast", though)

A musical genius, and I say that with no reservations. His style may not have been pop centric enough like a guy like Prince, but jus beautiful operatic rock songs

Has anyone seen his German language musical, Tanz der Vampire? It's damn good. But the highlight? "Totale Finsternes" - "Total Eclipse of the Heart" in German.
My favorite song of his: "Bad for Good," sung by Jim himself.
And a deep cut by Ellen Foley, best known for her work on "Bat Out of Hell." I only made aware of this a few weeks ago.
