Didn't David Arquette a couple years ago wrestle some matches under a mask and nobody had any idea it was him until he revealed it? Although I guess not too many people would've guessed that David Arquette was wrestling random indie shows in the first place. Didn't someone say CM Punk did the same thing? I believe Punk once said in an interview that if he returns to wrestling it’ll be for some random match in front of 300 people with one of his friends and that he’d probably be under a hood but I don’t remember hearing any stories of him actually doing that.

He pretty much did exactly that, except that he just GTSed someone rather than doing a full match.

He also managed someone at an indie show in like 2015 also under a mask, and I can’t find it now but I think someone implied those weren’t the only two times he’s done that.

With the internet, I think it would be impossible to hide someone's identity from the general public. Someone's going to figure it out. There are Mexican luchadores who have Wikipedia pages that list "unknown" for their real name.

He even does a backyard match for 0 fans and 0 money.

IWTV did a Masked Wrestler TV show where the whole point was, it was famous indie wrestlers under the masks and the audience speculated about who they were. The twittersphere pretty much threw out correct names among the top 2 or 3 guesses for each person, but the booking and performances did a good job making it harder. Like KTB actively pretended to be Nick Gage (which cleverly paid off in his eventual loss, because he was doing moves he wasn't very familiar with so they weren't as effective), Wheeler Yuta took advantage of the anonymity to cheat all the time (leading to a weird situation where he was the heel against Tony Deppen, of all people). It worked pretty well.
The person who got unmasked each episode was tied to kayfabe (they lost their match) which felt a little silly, but I'm not sure how you do it otherwise.

I’m still trying to figure out who The Machines were. No, Who was Jim Niedhart.

I'd watch that if it had mainstream guys

I still don’t know who that Mr. America guy was and also the Midnight Rider. Never could place their voices with a face.

Probably not. CHIKARA people were pretty hush hush about who were under the hoods and like all of them were figured out pretty quickly. To the point Quack derailed the entire GEKIDO storyline because the original 17 (Kyle Matthews) said he was 17 to some random fans at an Indy Show and despite building him up as an assassin and master of 17 forgotten holds in wrestling, proceeded to bury the shit out of him and "kill him" at their next show. But that's neither here nor there...

If they weren't all that big to begin with and came back after a few years off then maybe...for a year. If they ever got any sort of popular people would figure it out fast
