I gotta say I’m pretty surprised Xander got shut out, but he made two fatal mistakes:
1. The obvious move was to take Heather with him and let Deshawn and Erika fight it out with fire-making. It was absolutely the safest play, but he overthought it to a ridiculous degree. While his logic that giving Erika a big win in fire-making would boost her resume in front of the jury was sound, giving her a free pass ended up being a killer.
2. The way he described how Erika (and Heather) played the game made it sound like he had no respect for it and came off as unnecessarily dismissive in front of the jury. That obviously didn’t help his standing in front of them.
That said, I think Erika was a deserving winner. The biggest move of the game and virtually everything that followed was her doing in smashing the hourglass. She knew that doing that would make her a target, but she went ahead with it anyway and it paid off.

It's incredible how getting rid of Shan at final 8 turned out to be the downfall for Ricard, Danny, and DeShawn. The former lost his shield and the only person willing to advocate for his safety while the latter two lost an alliance member and ultimately their numbers advantage. If they waited a round or two to go ahead with that move, Erika likely would've been gone and the outcome of the game would've been much different.
It just goes to show you timing is everything when it comes to making a big move.
