I forget the exact quote but he was asked to work on the Netflix Dark Crystal series and said something like "I don't do puppets".

If both Disney and Sesame Street don't want you, maybe it's you. Though Disney liked him enough as Yoda to have him play him in two movies and a TV show. TV show?

Star Wars Rebels. Yoda made a couple of appearances on the show and Oz did the voice when he did.

Legitimately don't get the butthurt or bitterness comments. Dude has been a successful actor and director for decades post Muppets career.
He just doesn't like what they do with them now. As one of the creators of the most iconic things any muppet was involved in, his POV is going to be a certain way.
Hell, he's done Yoda in the Star Wars sequels--specifically Last Jedi, but also had a bit of his voice in the last one.

Imagine having been the voice of f***ing YODA, but still finding it in you to sit around and go "They ain't doin' them puppets right, I tell ya!" Like...who gives a shit about the Muppets? Honestly. It's 2021, not 1991. I had no idea that the Muppets even still existed, and I'm willing to bet most people, especially those without children, don't either. And you know who doesn't give a shit about the "soul" of a bunch of puppets? The kids staring blankly at the bright colors and rapidly moving images, and the parents of those kids who are using this outdated nonsense to keep the kid busy while they try to grab a few minutes of peace between poops and emotional outbursts. I just can't imagine walking around with a chip on your shoulder just because you don't think the people voicing a God damn red furry jackoff that talks like a baby are doing it with enough "soul". I'm sorry for my outburst. But you're not mad or anything.

Is he bitter? Yeah, but when you consider how Disney sucks up licenses and properties and treats the creators with no respect, it's kinda justified. Just look at how they're treating the authors of books they've bought the rights to, but with none of the obligations of, y'know, paying them or anything.

To me, Frank Oz is the guy who played a cop in both "Trading Places" and "Blues Brothers". It's just...such a weird thing to freak out about. Like, who ever looked at "Sesame Street" or the Muppets and went "You know what I love about this? The SOUL in Cookie Monster's voice! The absolute artistic vision with which his mouth is flapped up and down, and his arms failing so beautifully, as though Michaelangelo himself designed their graceless motion." It's a f***ing puppet that teaches kids to count, man. If that's your idea of art, there is a lot of disappointment awaiting you in life. Calm down.

Keep in mind that those puppets were the things that gave him any sort of career&his boss there was his mentor and one of his best friends.
I'd be amazed if he didn't have emotions tied up with the things he and his friend created.

It shows a complete ignorance about the artistry and creative effort required in puppetry.

I loved the Muppets as a kid and when I realized the similarity between Oscar and Diogenes the Cynic as an adult, I wanted to write a Bachelor thesis on it. There's plenty of room to find and confirm artistic vision in the Muppets and every other puppet show.

Mmmmmmmm.....strong with the Bitterness, he is. I do agree that neither franchise is what it used to be, though. Sesame is now mostly for selling toys to kids and lost its edge a long time ago. Muppets is brilliant every so often, but yeah hasn't been the same without Jim. And Henson didn't own Sesame Street, just supplied the Muppets, no? Originally Henson did, but when he was originally planning to sell to Disney so he could basically move on and focus on other things, he made it abundantly clear that Sesame Street is a complete and seperate thing from the Muppets. Disney still does not own Sesame Street.

Also the Muppets themselves (which again is not the same as Sesame Street) was not and is not aimed at children. The Muppet Show was a prime time comedy show.

Yes, the Muppet Show was aimed at adults (or at least families), but there was Muppet Babies (as well as a book series portraying the muppets as pre-teens), which was aimed at kids and was presumably geared toward kids who were familiar with the characters (since almost all of them acted like their muppet show counterparts, personality-wise). Doesnt mean that the Muppets can't be enjoyed by children of all ages though.

Which is pretty fascinating, because Muppets were never treated as prime time family/adult tv in Germany. They were broadcasted in a similar timeslot as Sesame Street. The same can be said about Dinosaurs. While I guess it was established early on that anime is prime time tv in Japan, the same can be said about puppet shows in America, while Germany and likely a lot more European countries always dismissed it as kids tv.
