I've said before that Mabel's problem was he was Barney: Purple, but also *very* green. He hurt Diesel and Undertaker during that run, didn't he? He just was too inexperienced and young for that kind of push. WWF had a dear need for some more high-level players, but he wasn't there yet. I do often forget about Triple H winning. Famously, he'd have won '96 before Austin was slotted since Vince was pressured by the veterans to retaliate for the curtain call. Obviously, Austin was going to get a push eventually, but when Austin, Cornette, and basically everyone involved say it was going to be Triple H but then Austin got it to punish Hunter, I believe it. It's odd to me how WWE will go long stretches of not doing KOTR when it's just about the easiest accolade they can give someone, and it's one with such a pedigree. Angle, Brock, Bret, Edge, Austin, Triple H, etc, and they still can only be arsed to do it every couple of years. Can't say I understand. It should have stayed like in 2002 where the winner gets a SummerSlam title match. That was a great idea 100% agree. That was a great idea that made the KotR seem important

Pre show thats not even on the network KOTR winners are so fascinating from those early years. You had Bret who was a recent WWF champ, Owen who was jobbing for a full year until the Bret feud, company had no one better choice than Mabel for the KOTR win or Summerslam main event and Austin was a WCW reject to many and I'm sure in the eyes on WWF as well. WWE executives and even any wrestlers with WWF probably owes them their career even now but sadly, I doubt anyone thought much of him at the time. I'm guessing the KOTR tournament was thrown together and no one really cared about who won it. I'm actually surprise Marc Mero wasn't chosen given his big contract.

It's funny how there are a bunch of KOTR tournaments that just never get talked about. Some are because the talent has all but disappeared from WWE lore, like Shamrock, so this one being constantly ignored is surprising.

Believe it was more or less done to keep Bret happy after he dropped the title. By the time the next year rolled around, Owen needed an accolade to help with the Bret feud. By 95, it really served no purpose.
