I wonder how many times when the singer does the 'point the mic at the audience and let them sing' is because they just forgot the words.

Back in the 80’s, I saw an interview with Peter Gabriel and he said that is exactly what he does when he forgets the words. He admits that his fans know the words better than he does.

Gene Simmons has mentioned that moments in the show when he randomly yells out "OH YEAH!!" its because he forgot the lyrics, Gene also pointed out that when the KISS reunion was in rehearsals and they were working to get it 100% right, Gene learned that he had been playing Strutter wrong for the last 20 years which was a song he wrote.

I'm more surprised it doesn't happen more often tbh. I can never remember half the stuff I wrote.
In fact, if you want to know how old this trope this, there is audio of Victorian poetry great Robert Browning (taken right at the end of his life in 1889) where he was asked to recite one of his poems and gets a few lines out before apologising as "I can't remember me verses!"
