It really sucks going to a TV/taping. Wrestler makes an entrance, and then proceeds to stand in a dark ring while 5-8 minutes of video play on the screen. It’s f***ing brutal sitting in the audience when they do this. Totally makes you tune out the videos because you’re anticipating the match

Not only does it make no sense on TV, but live it looks even more ridiculous. Nothing says wrestling-badass like making a talent stand around watching WWE commercials with the audience.

So Meltzer was asked about the whole "do an entrance and then there's an interview and then a commercial and then a recap video and then a segment and finally the match starts" trend that we've all noticed. He said that he's talked to people there and the reason is that they think if they have a star like Riddle or Bianca come out for a match that you'll be so excited to see them wrestle that you'll be willing to sit through all the commercials and segments for that match. And if they just did that stuff before or after the match, you'll just tune away so they need that hook to keep viewers. He noted he doesn't personally believe it works but this is their mindset. See even Andre the Giant is comfused

The live audience is not a priority. It is there to provide a sports feel so they can justify their enormous tv rights fees. As discussed in another thread awhile back the day may come where they provide a mostly if not all planted audience so they can completely control their reactions. And there it is, the core reason the WWE is falling apart.

And there it is, the core reason the WWE is falling apart. Repeating a WCW mistake. WCW did huge business when the NWO was hot. When Raw started catching up and beating Nitro in the ratings WCW began hot shotting PPV level matches on free TV to try and pop a rating. They devalued PPV so when business went down they had destroyed a major income stream. WWE is making major cash on their TV deals right now. But if something ever happens to those deals they may regret driving away their live audiences chasing ratings.

I really doubt people are on the edge of their seat during ads waiting to see Nakamura VS Corbin for the eleventh time.

Put up a graphic showing who's next. Have the next person cut a short backstage promo. Show them walking backstage on the way to gorilla. Have the commentators run down what's happening next. Use the crappy CG graphics to flash a neon sign saying who's next.
Just do anything other than this entrance, then a million other things trope. By the time they get back to ring I've usually forgotten who's there waiting. It just makes them look like an idiot for standing around for 10 mins.

I love how WWE’s current mentality is that they’re aware the shows suck, but instead of addressing that directly, they just restructure the order in which the suck is presented to try and trick(?) their fans into watching it all.

Come to think of it, didn't they do a thing for awhile where the wrestlers would just stop wrestling during commercial breaks? Then there was the weird two out of three falls thing or whatever that was, right? Basically, I won't be shocked if this is dropped quickly enough, too, but it'll just lead to another weird "throw shit at the wall" tactic that'll baffle people.

Yeah that was period where Vince decided that since football games and whatnot don’t progress during commercial breaks, wrestling matches shouldn’t either. I swear, getting a glimpse into Vince’s mind would be both fascinating and terrifying.

I guess they changed it to have both people come out, then commercial/another thing, then the match starts
