Vince won it in like his 2nd or 3rd match ever. Lol.

I think Drew is almost the answer. 2-3 months before his win he was a random midcard heel with no momentum but then 2020 arrived, he started acting tweener-like and got really over so by the Rumble he had already became an obvious candidate to win. Just highlighting this to point out that Drew's big main event push started in like, early December but was done so well that him winning the Rumble in mid January not only felt completely organic, but 100% the right move. My point being: Anyone can be salvaged from crap booking if it's done correctly Yeah, if you said on December 1 2019 that McIntyre was going to win the Rumble the next month the news would probably have been met with "really??" and gotten a Conway pop live but those few weeks of build were so good it ended up working. You can make someone in very short order if you really want to. Batista is another example. Throughout most of 2004 he was just Evolution's bodyguard and by far the least over member of the group but a few segments teasing dissension with HHH in October/November and suddenly he has huge momentum and getting bigger pops every week. More recent examples are Kofi/Seth in those gauntlet matches. In 2019 Kofi went from popular but decidedly midcard tag guy to fans demanding he win the world title within one episode of TV. And Seth in 2018 was a former world champion but didn't have a lot of momentum after his babyface turn never really clicked. He pins Cena and Reigns in that gauntlet though and suddenly he's the hottest guy in the company.
