Sami, brother, I love you.
You are no Bret Hart.

Only if it ends in WWE resigning Scott Steiner as the counter-debater like they did with Nowinski and Sami getting suplexed and Steiner Reclinered.

I don't think it will work the way he wants it to.

it would get the wrong kind of heat. and while Canadian fans love Sami, he's not Bret Hart. Bret is basically a national institution here, and Sami... isn't.

“I would love to do a more modernized version, a bit more of an intellectual approach. A bit more of a factual approach to what Bret did in 1997 because I thought it was revolutionary. It’s never been done before and it’s never been done since. Global hero, despised in one country like that. It was revolutionary, we all remember it, we all rave about it to this day.” www.sportsnet.ca/wwe/article/oral-history-bret-hitman-hart-became-excellence-execution/With NK's claim that they don't do politics on-air anymore, I doubt this happens. 1997 was a different time...not only for what gimmicks/heat still worked, but also patriotism was nowhere as intense and borderline toxic then.

First problem is Sami isn’t Bret Hart. Bret Hart was the face of the company as a face for several years and then had a pretty decent story that lead to him turning his back on American fans.
Sami Zayn is Sami Zayn who could disappear from tv next week and it’s take a few weeks before people started wondering where he was.

Bret's heel turn came about with him articulating that fans lost their way cheering for Austin, violence & rebellion. The Canada/US thing was organic and I truly don't think there's any way to artificially replicate it. The problem with Sami's idea is that Bret was the upright babyface forever before his turn. Sami's been a slimy, groveling heel for the last few years.

Eh, it wouldn't work in the same way. Same as Hogan joining the nWo... it was a perfect set of circumstances which made it so effective.
Surprised to hear Bret thought it hurt his career though. I thought the whole thing was excellent.

Sami, Bobby Roode, Kevin Owens, Jinder and Nattie COULD be a fun all Canadian Faction.. if booked proper, but you know it wouldn't.

I think Sami just wants a plataform to shit talk all the awful things the US does, I'm not against it Lawler: "Hey, Sami! If you don't love this country you can LEAVE!" *points and nods while Cole says, "GOOD FOR YOU KING!* Actual parties playing these roles might be different, but yes, this is exactly what would happen. Any serious/valid/uncomfortable points Sami made would be countered in real time on commentary with rah-rah USA. The angle would be mostly forgotten within a couple of weeks, then revived two months later on a random night when Vince was feeling particularly patriotic just so Goldberg could come out in red, white and blue Zubaz pants, spear Sami out of his boots and dedicate it to the troops.

Would really rather nobody did this.
It's just going to be another thing that makes people go for each other's throats discussing it on the internet, if it happens.

Yeah, they tried this with Muhammad Hassan, and for a brief moment I thought they might actually pull off a guy who says uncomfortable truths (or perhaps opinions that are grounded in legitimate grievances)... Then a week or two later he was a generic anti US heel during a time when tensions were pretty high. Though Goldberg in red, white and blue Zubaz is almost selling me on the angle.

Then a week or two later he was a generic anti US heel during a time when tensions were pretty high. The first Hassan Promo was 100% intended to be a heel promo. It was extremely hostile and accusatory of the audience, the WWE knew exactly what they were doing. the idea was pretty blatant "You aren't booing me because I'm a jerk, you're booing me because you're a racist... you racist." It was absolutely not meant to be a reasoned debate about how Muslims were treated after 9/11. If that was really what they were going for they probably shouldn't have cast an Italian guy in the role. Not to mention how exactly does that like fit a wrestling narrative?

But we don’t have an Stone Cold or HBK equivalent to make it work, and those are big shoes to fill.

A heel is allowed to have justifiable motives, it's the fact they go overboard with their actions which means you can't condone them.

If you were looking to bring more nuance to your career, then you should never have re-signed with WWE, Sami.
That’s on you.

I think he "could" do it. But the reality is he'd say something, one of Vince's pals in DC will give him a call telling him "to muzzle his dog", Sami then jobs to Dolph Ziggler for 2 months and is released.
