Original ending he dies Alternate ending he survives. The Alpha comes for his mate and let's Smith live. Smith sees that they see him as a monster for experimenting on them and decides to change and find the colony Basically the original ending... actually made the title make sense... cause the fact he is the last human and is basically the boogeyman to the creatures is why he is Legend. You know, I used to believe that a zombie apocalypse couldn't possibly happen in a world where zombie apocalypse media exists. But *vaguely waves at world* I'll have you know I am Legend is a VAMPIRE Apocalypse.

I think TWD and TLoU show post apocalyptic stuff works better in a tv format than the big screen so hopefully Prime or HBO one day take a chance on I am Legend and World War Z as neither film adaption lived up to the book.

What if they retcon the dog dying and instead make it so the virus mutated him into a super evolved dog creature that can talk and he spends the whole movie as the comic relief making wisecracks. Oddly I wasn't really thinking of "A Boy and His Dog" just now when I typed that, but its hard not to see the similarities now that I think about it.

Are there any other examples of a sequel completely rewriting history on the ending of the previous film?

Are there any other examples of a sequel completely rewriting history on the ending of the previous film? First one to come to mind is X-Men: Apocalypse. At the end of Days of Future Past Wolverine is retrieved from the bottom of the Potomac by Mystique posing as William Stryker. In Apocalypse this is retconned to have been the real Stryker, who's held Wolverine captive for experimentation in the intervening years.

Are there any other examples of a sequel completely rewriting history on the ending of the previous film? Original FRIDAY THE 13TH, Mrs. Voorhees is killing camp counselors because her son drowned at the camp as a little boy. Dead little boy Jason pops out of the water at the end of the movie and attacks the final girl, but that part was all a dream. FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2, Jason didn't actually drown as a little boy, he survived in the woods and didn't bother to meet up with his mom, but saw her get killed (apparently). Adult Jason puts a burlap sack over his head and continues his mom's mission of camp counselor murder. I'm sure there's other examples of this in horror sequels, but this is the first to come to mind. Though the I AM LEGEND example I think is unique in that it accepts the "director's cut"/alternate ending as canon over the theatrical.

I'm sure there's other examples of this in horror sequels, but this is the first to come to mind. Halloween: Resurrection rewrites the ending of H20 so Michael survives. Evil Dead 2's prologue basically retells the events if the first movie, but cuts out all characters except Ash and Linda, and changes Ash from a somewhat timid guy who reluctantly commits violence to survive into someone who doesn't really bat an eyelid at slaughtering the undead.

Are there any other examples of a sequel completely rewriting history on the ending of the previous film? Halloween has done that twice. Possibly three times?

And the ending of Evil Dead 2 doesn't match up with Army of Darkness.
