2002 was a year of atrocious moves by WWE, and this was one of the worst. My fandom was already hanging by a thread after the company name change, the brand split, the laughable attempt at remaking the nWo and the Triple H overload. When they unified the IC with the European title, I wasn't totally opposed (Eurocontinental, right?), but then they unified it with the Hardcore belt, and then absorbed it altogether into the WHC. There came a point where it was clear this was all for the benefit of one dude:

I'm glad at this post it's a 48-0 unanimous vote. But with how prestigious the IC title is nowadays, maybe it does need to get retired and reintroduced in 6 months. I'd like to see them strap up someone like Ricochet or Ali and have them do an RVD with it. Go on a year long string of successful defenses, put it on PPV, have them cut promos about how they don't give a shit about the world title, this is THEIR belt. Any title is only as important as the company treats it. Make it seem like a big deal, and it will be a big deal. I'm not sure why companies are struggling to make the mid-card title mean something. AEW even struggles today with keeping the TNT Title relevant. Where did the art get lost?

I mean the stated reason was fine. Less titles means more prestige on the existing ones. It just means you cant use a title as a crutch for 2 guys to feud over. You have to come up with some creative feuds.
The problem is that WWE creative had gone way downhill by this point, plus this was when Vince and Co. no longer seemed to care about anything but the main event. So the midcard really got the shaft. Smackdown was decent for awhile but Raw was dire.

It was a terrible idea when you had this plan on HHH being on top for so long. So many guys who had nothing to do or fight for. The need a second title beyond the Tag for male. I got the Hardcore and European title. But like everything?

I'll go one step further and say cutting the European title was stupid too. Lower card guys should have some reason to, like, exist and something to fight over.

Unless they're continuing with the crash TV element of the programing, I gotta disagree. Within a year, almost all backstage segments and promo spots were relegated to the top spots and many undercard guys were just there to have matches. When Intercontinental champion Shelton Benjamin went through a period of having zero challengers, zero character time and zero promos...that's a huge problem. You're only escalating that with even more titles. If you do keep the European or Hardcore titles around, relegate them to Heat. No reason you can't have a decent little feud on there from time to time.

This has to be the most lopsided poll in the history of this website.

Even the Sonya Deville nazi poll had like two votes for "yes", this is wild.

Who's the wiseguy who voted Yes? Seriously. 2 of them now. I feel like if you vote "Yes" you should HAVE to give a reason.

I feel like it worked out okay only because they were able to utilise both sets of tag titles for a while by putting more singles guys together but even then that couldn't last forever. Titles if anything are an easy way to build a feud.
At one point there was too many titles on Raw but they should have stopped at the European and Hardcore titles. Ideally i would have moved the Euro title onto Eddie and had that be Smackdowns secondary title a year earlier but then i was always a mark for the Euro belt.

It was dumb and Bischoff just handing Triple H the new World Heavyweight belt was dumb.

From what rumors at the time said the original plan for Raw was to elevate the IC title to World status by unifying the Euro and Hardcore title with it. This was when the plan was for RVD and H to be the top faces on Raw with RVD holding the title and H battling the NWO. When plans changed and they decided to turn H into a Ric Flair knockoff the IC title wasnt good enough for him and they dusted off Big Gold.
