I didn't know anything about this until one of those WWE documentaries that came out years after the fact. I like most fans had stopped watching WCW years before this happened, (serious question, when did this happen?) I don't remember anybody I knew that still watched WCW even mentioning that Goldberg turned heel so it seems the wrestling world viewed this with a massive shoulder shrug. Another Nitro, another random heel turn. Because BRO! Sting, Rey, Goldberg, turn them all heel bro!!! That'll get the fans back bro!!! How did Goldberg switch back to face? In the Nitros leading up to New Blood Rising they had Steiner,Nash, Goldberg and Russo do "shoot" style sit down interviews, Goldberg mentioned He wasn't happy with being a heel, Russo mentioned he liked 2 of the 3 guys in the match. During the 3way at New Blood Rising, Goldberg walked out on taking a jackknife, leading to Him and Russo yelling at each other and the announcers explaining it as Goldberg refused to follow the script. The following Nitro started with a Russo "shoot" and Goldberg and Tank Abbott brawling, ending Goldberg's heel run after 2 months. Having recently rewatched this period it was a bit of a shock but then got confusing quickly,he was booed the next couple of shows but different crowds just cheered Goldberg any way. High-water marks of the heel run were the program with Nash leading to their match at Bash at the Beach (totally overshadowed by other events that night), feuding with new champion Booker T and the match with Duggan, The way it was presented with Duggan's wife begging him not to do the match and the repeated kidney shots was the most heelish Goldberg ever got.

It's a case of WCW trying to fix one of the few things that wasn't broken.

One of the dumbest things they did.

He had a fresh slate of opponents as a heel than a face. He'd only just returned after being injured for 6 months and had 1 match as a face against Tank Abbott before turning, With the roster being shaken up due to people either turning or leaving his opponents would have felt fresh either way.

The biggest problem is that the fans simply did not want to boo Goldberg.

What were they doing with Hall? When did Hall finish with WCW? Was there some type of send-off or he was just gone one week and WCW continued to make random references to him? WCW didn't use Hall again after SuperBrawl in February 2000. There was a Nash/Goldberg match at Bash at the Beach in July where if Goldberg won, which he did, Hall would be "fired." WCW fired for him for real in October. Thanks for the info. I didn't know Hall lasted until 2000.

Sounds like Russo b.s. Bro say "script" on TV bro! I hope nobody is stupid enough to ever bring this piece of shit back to the wrestling business. 🤬🤦♂️

You don't turn your top money maker heel when you're bleeding to death. Such a stupid move.

The fans didn't want to boo Goldberg.
Goldberg didn't want to be a heel.
Goldberg's character did not need to turn. He had just came back from an injury, and hadn't really been active in the world title scene since Starrcade 1998. Goldberg just wasn't played out or stale at all.
Speaking of the Streak, he turned on Nash, the person who ended the Streak using underhanded means.
Nothing about the turn made sense at all.

It failed the same reason as the Sting heel turn did during the previous year.
He was so over with fans they were going to cheer him no matter what he did.

It failed the same reason as the Sting heel turn did during the previous year. He was so over with fans they were going to cheer him no matter what he did. The Sting one was I feel a bit worse because of the opponent. Yes, Hogan was face again and back in the red and yellow, but he still had the history with the nWo. I know he probably never would have agreed to it, but if I were to turn Sting heel in WCW...I'd kinda have him revert back to his Surfer character, but play it up in a heelish way like how Kurt Angle was when he started out.

Besides Booker beating him, all I remember of him as a heel was eating Scott Hall's WCW contract. He also infamously “refused” to go up for Nash’s powerbomb leaving him and Scott ‘The Pro’s Pro’ Steiner “improvising” the finish of the match. Dumb as that was. The First half an hour of Nitro the next night was even dumber with Russo bringing Tank Abbott out to prove that Goldberg was not a legit shooter and then cutting a promo demanding that he come down the aisle to face Tank and, I’m not making this quote up, “call it in the ring.” He doesn’t even know what a shoot is…
