Looks like Vince offered him an out but Regal insisted on doing it --- Recalling the day it happened, Regal said: ‘I was just told that day and I was like, “Great!” Whatever anybody wants to believe or not, I was arguing with Mr. McMahon before we were walking through the curtain. ‘He was going, “You don’t have to do that you know? That’s not the thing, it’s just you’re gonna get there, stop and I’m gonna slap you”. I said, “No I’m gonna do it! I really need to be humiliated so I can take that spite out on whoever I’m wrestling next.” ‘ --- Most wrestling reasons ever metro.co.uk/2022/05/23/william-regal-argued-with-wwe-boss-vince-mcmahon-over-kiss-my-a-club-16696058/?ico=more_text_links

I never saw an issue with this to be honest.
Regal's character kissed his ass. Not Regal the man himself.
If this happened in a movie, nobody would be saying the performer was "humiliated"

Highly recommend Regal's podcast he just started. He has a lot of good advice and the stories so far are of course interesting.
Big thing he said was if you are a wrestler and they give you an angle go all in with it even if you think it's stupid. Because if you don't it won't work, and a lot of times that one stupid angle is your one chance

If this happened in a movie, nobody would be saying the performer was "humiliated" To my mind that's neither here nor there. One's boss shouldn't be asking them to kiss their ass whether they're playing a character or not. It'd be nice if Regal had used his stature to say "I'm not f***ing doing that and no one else should either".

Do you hold the same opinion about Trish barking like a dog? Or, say, the movie 9 1/2 weeks?

I thought it was disgusting and one of the reasons I eventually stopped watching (Katie Vick totally got me to stop). Wrestling and wrestlers want to be so deep rooted in reality, so for me this was just as much real as Vince and his latest scandal. Does Regal or Jim Ross (of course not!) or Marty have any say in the matter? If they say no and they aren't let go, they are probably pariah's in the locker room, surely brought into wrestler's court.
The mentality of wrestling is also rooted, in WWE, in Vince won't ask his guys to do anything he wouldn't do and of course, he got his face put in Big Show's bare butt. Because in his mind, that's cool, that's edgy, that's real and entertaining.
As said above, Regal should have spoken up about this. I'm actually disappointed he was so positive about doing it. But I don't think he had much power to say no back then. He wasn't too far from the lowest point in his life.

I would have had the same reaction.
"That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of.
LET'S GO FOR IT!"

I love that Regal doesn't take himself seriously, but the KMA Club was embarrassing.

As a 1 off with Regal, it'd have been fine.
Comedy segment to humiliate a posh heel, not a classic but wrestling's had worse and Regal is the perfect guy to do it.
One of those things people would look back and be... that was weird... but a fun segment.
But it carried on, it came back like, a dozen times!

I think something worth remembering when people ask why so and so agreed to certain spots, picture a powerbomb in your head. A very common move, very popular, very accepted.
Where is your face when you're delivering a powerbomb? Where does your hand go when you give a scoop slam?
As long as people are showered and in clean gear, it's not really a big deal provided you not dwell on it, and similarly, the ass kiss spot or a stinkface are generally going to be as weird ass where on the ass it's happening.

It's not so much the act itself but storyline motivation that strikes me as oddball rasslin' logic. Not once have I seen that in a movie etc. For instance, Peter Parker didn't kiss J. Jonah Jameson's bare naked ass to get the motivation for Spiderman to whup Green Goblin. Maybe this kind of explains why WWE hasn't been hot must-see TV in over 20 years?

In principle, sure. This is why the context is key Everything about Vince is why making Regal do this is f***ed up It would not be as bad if Vince was booking Regal to kiss almost anybody else's ass in the whole company

Honestly, with recent investigations coming out, man does the KMA club age substantially poorer than it already did, holy shit.
The story somehow makes things worse, not better.

Once, when I was training, I worked a 3 minute training match with a buddy where I was supposed to go over with a surprise sunset flip. I had to force a kickoff and call an audible because dude's taint STANK!

Reminds me of that infamous match with Midnight Express versus jobbers where Bobby Eaton and Stan Lane are increasingly disgusted with one of them and seem to be trying to avoid touching him because he seemingly was really gross.
