Two Montreal trades. Whatttt. So out of the ordinary. Wonder if they kept it under wraps so ESPN could get something to make news/buzz tonight.

Chicago with the complete tear-down. Dach is what Montreal has needed, a big skilled center.

So Chicago, after trading their 1st, obtains #8 and #13 tonight. That's pretty good, but I would prefer if they got those picks in next year's 1st. As is, they traded an All-Star caliber winger and their center of the future for probably a couple of very good, but not great, prospects, and overall pushed their window back about 3 years. Are they officially tanking?

Some Devils fans whining we took Nemec instead of Wright, but I honestly went into this draft wanting one of the top defensemen and that’s just what we got.
Right side now has Hamilton, Severson (will see if he re-signs), and now Nemec, with Luke Hughes and others on the way up on the left side. I like it.

On one hand the Devils need to have better not being scored on ability (be it at defenseman or goalie but no goalie is going at 2 this day and age) but I am a believer in drafting the best player no matter where (maybe NFL I can see an argument against it but then you trade down a few spots but this is neither here nor there)

All in all, the Devils defensemen were decent last season, and that's with Hamilton spending a good deal of the season injured. I'm glad they made the trade for Vanecek today, as him with a healthy Blackwood doesn't guarantee anything like elite goaltending, but likely puts them back towards the middle of the pack without having to give up much, which is something they very much needed. Nemec is the pick, I think, not so much because he improves the defense now (dude might not even make the big league club for another year or two), but because he's a high end prospect who plays a premium position as a right-handed shot D-man and, frankly, there wasn't a slam dunk #1-#2 pick combo this season. The guys bunched around numbers 1-5 or so were pretty bunched up this year, and could've gone in numerous different combinations, so I don't really see taking Nemec over Wright as much of a reach. And hey, if we talk about drafting for need the Devils' farm system could use some more centers, too, but they opted for defense in this draft (a lot more really interesting centers will be on the board in next year's draft). Also, just going by what I've read, but it sounds like if the Devils passed on Nemec or traded down then Philly and Seattle had their eyes on him, too; I read that Fitzgerald tried to use the 2 OA to get Tchachuk in a trade with Calgary, but nothing doing there, and once he couldn't get a big piece with the pick he looked into trading down but didn't like the way the team's beneath the Devils were lining up. In that case, if he had Nemec as a top level pick? I'm cool with it. They also did some decent drafting today in the other rounds, so all in all not too shabby a couple of days. ...I do hate the Flyers getting Gauttier, but the rest of their organization is so inept that I'll hope it won't become a major issue moving forward.

I’ll just watch on Sportsnet. I get good coverage. Go Canada! Yeah, screw it, I'll drive down to Asbury for the Devils' draft party; I'm sure they'll have the TV/sound on, but there should be enough people that it'll get drowned out before it can rob me of extra brain cells. Made sure to grab this bad boy for the occasion. Pretty good site for shirts, too. www.allegiantgoods.co/collections/new-jersey/products/new-jersey-jersey-menunisex-t-shirtRogers, who owns Sportsnet has been down since some time last night. So no phone, internet, ATMs, online banking, paying with debit all across Canada. 🤬

Flyers are apparently doing everything in their power to clear cap space to make a run at Johnny Hockey.
While it'd hurt to see such a talented guy play for such a hated rival team, the Flyers landing him at something like 8 years/$11.5 million per would be the epitome of the current Flyers. Like, I read this at the Hockey Futures board, and holy shit:
"Flyers last 3 trades involving defenders back to last year...
In Rasmus Ristolainen Tony DeAngelo 7th round pick
Out D Shayne Gostisbehre D Robert Hagg 2021 1st round pick 2022 2nd round pick 2023 2nd round pick 2024 2nd round pick 2023 3rd round pick 2022 4th round pick 2022 7th round pick
That is a lot of assets thrown away with very little in return"
This isn't even counting the sheer number of big ass contracts they still have on the books for the next 3-5 seasons, but go ahead Philly, get Gaudreau and plunge yourself into the utter, searing depth of cap hell and doom yourself to be the laughingstock of the Metro for the next decade, pls. I'd be angry because Gaudreau should be a star featured on a club making the playoffs on the regular, but if he gives it all up to sign with his childhood team when they're being run like this, well, that's kind of on him, too.
Meantime: -Matt Murray to Toronto from Ottawa, in yet another sign of how thin the market for decent goaltending really is nowadays -The Geno Era is likely over in Pitt -Pitt nevertheless decides to sign the perpetually injured Rickard Rakell for 6 years/$5 million per, because they know they need to keep Sid happy until his body completely gives out and this core's run officially ends. -Nichushkin stays in Colorado for 8 years/$6.25 million per. That's, uh, kind of crazy for a guy who didn't score more than 40 points until this year, but I do love Nichushkin's overall game and really wanted to see the Devils make a run at him...but at that length? Ehhhh...makes more sense for Colorado, who intend to keep competing for Cups over the next number of years.
Oh, right, and FREE AGENT FRENZY(?) STARTS TOMORROW. Whether it's an actual frenzy or merely a quiet lunch now remains to be seen.

No one wants to play for Torts. Johnny Hockey to NJ
Still not giving up hope that Geno signs with the Pens. Otherwise I’ll have to find a new hockey team to cheer for.

Robert Thomas staying in St. Louis, 8 years/$64 million
Gaudreau keeps getting attached to the Flyers and Devils, but Devils apparently also have feelers out on Ondrej Palat. Given that Philly might be working all week to get under the cap enough to afford Gaudreau, Devils could end up targeting Palat so they don't have to play the waiting game. Islanders are the sleeper in the Johnny Hockey sweepstakes, though Washington could also be a late arrival.
