The Devils are far, far too close to going to arbitration with Jesper Bratt and I don't like it. Dude emerged as a play driving winger and one of the top 5-on-5 wings in the game, and I don't want him anywhere but Newark in the near future.
Sounds like Bratt and the team are close on how much to pay him, but Bratt wants a short term deal so he gets a crack at free agency before he turns 30, while the Devils want to lock him up 7-8 years ala how they deal with Hughes and Hischier.
I don't care what the outcome is so long as they avoid arbitration. Clock's ticking.
ETA: Last minute one year deal, thank God.

In one story I heard years ago, during a contract arbitration, the arbitrator finally asked, "What's this 5-on-5 you keep talking about?"

But yeah, the fear there is more about how in hockey, in particular, it seems that going to arbitration just ends up hurting the relationship between team and player in a way I’ve never quite seen it happen in, say, baseball.

Woah, Florida/Calgary trade just changed complexion: Huberdeau signs an 8 year extension with the Flames.

The off-season started with Calgary for sure losing Gaudreau and Tkachuk wanting out. They've really pulled the nose back up on the plane. But also, f*** Kadri.

Calgary all in on the next 2-4 years; the entire front office probably realizes they’ll be fired without a Cup by then, so balls to the wall it is!

Nils Lundkvist from the Rangers going to Dallas for a top-10 protected 1st rounder in 2023 that can slide to an unprotected 1st rounder in 2024 and also a conditional 4th in 2025.
I think Nasa just detected my erection from outer space. That's a risk from Dallas.

PK's going to make a killing as a commentator, dude's so charismatic.
But hey! Season's just a couple weeks away! Time for some Sure-to-be-Completely-Wrong(tm) Predictions!
Metropolitan, aka The Division of Death 1. Carolina - Lost a few pieces, still the class of the division until further notice. 2. Pittsburgh - They'll fall off and the Crosby/Malkin/Letang era will end...eventually. I need to see it happen, first. 3. New York - R - Benefitted from a lot of career years last season, but a few top stars and all-world goaltending will keep them in the playoffs. 4. Washington - They'll fall off and the Ovechkin era will end...eventually. I need to see it happen, first. 5. New Jersey - This assumes healthy goaltending, because the forward corps is deep and the defense has a lot of strong and rising talent. 6. New York - I - Great goaltending, yes, and the schedule plus COVID absolutely hurt them last year, but this isn't a young team and they're vulnerable. 7. Columbus - Dangerous, don't take a 7th place ranking as a full indictment. Just not quite good enough in the Death Division. 8. Philadelphia - lol
Atlantic, aka Of Cup Contenders and Youth Movements 1. Toronto - Top three teams are kind of interchangeable, so putting the Leafs here is just a hunch. Think their first round loss last year was different from years before, and they'll be very hungry. 2. Florida - Getting Tkachuk, my lord. Better win soon, though, that salary cap is starting to hurt real bad. 3. Tampa - Can't keep the whole band together forever, but they're still very much in the running. 4. Boston - Their time draws near, but the core remains for at least another year and should keep them on the playoff bubble. 5. Buffalo - Screw it, let's see the kids start making some noise. Team on the rise. 6. Ottawa - Same story. 7. Detroit - Same story! Honestly, just like the top three I think 5-7 is almost interchangeable, too, but I do think Detroit lags just a bit. 8. Montreal - Finally realized they need to tear down and rebuild, made some great moves in the offseason to try and make it as short a process as possible, but this year's gonna sting.
Central, aka The Champs' Abode 1. Colorado - Taking up residence on top and in the rest of the division's heads until further notice. 2. St. Louis - Depth, depth, depth. Kind of shocked they didn't show more in the playoffs last year, they're still tough as hell. 3. Minnesota - Lots of dead cap numbers, but an overall strong roster, and having The Flower all year, if healthy, could be fun for them. 4. Dallas - Getting older, not sure how far they can go, but some improvements this offseason means they may do more than just sneak into the playoffs. 5. Nashville - Good team, will be on the bubble, but still hard to imagine them doing more than that. First round exit again? 6. Winnipeg - Sorry folks, the Good Times are Over. 7. Chicago - Like Montreal, some smart moves to try and keep the rebuild shorter than it has to be, but way too work left to do. 8. Arizona - The tears of unfathomable sadness confined to a 5,000 seat arena.
Pacific, aka WTF 1. Calgary - I don't feel confident in this pick, but hey, they're all in, right? Need a Cup soon, or heads will roll. 2. Edmonton - McJesus Saves, though someone consistently doing so in net would be nice. 3. Vegas - Easy to pick them to fall, but injuries absolutely leveled them last year and I assume it won't be quite as bad this year. Back on track, but not the top contenders they once were, and the only thing missing from the backstage drama is a box of Mindy's Muffins. 4. Vancouver - Risky pick here, but I think they have it in them to make it to the dance this year. 5. Los Angeles - Continue to grow, but a slight step back this season in a slightly deeper division. Still going to be very dangerous, very soon. 6. Anaheim - Also rebuilding apace, but not as far along as LA is. 7. San Jose - Could well finish last, but might finally be reaching the "accepting you have a problem" stage. 8. Seattle - Might make the jump to 7th, but too much ground to make up and a healthier Vegas makes this a better division than the last couple of years.
Playoff teams Metro - Carolina, Pitt, New York (R), Washington, New Jersey Atlantic - Toronto, Florida, Tampa Central - Colorado, St. Louis, Minnesota, Dallas Pacific - Calgary, Edmonton, Vegas, Vancouver
Feels like I'm taking a big risk on picking my Devils to finally break through at the expense of Boston, but the Atlantic's got a lot of young, exciting teams in it that could drag the older Bruins down and have them just miss; that said, I still have the Capitals #4 in the Metro and making it, but I could envision this being the year they slip down the mountain, so maybe Boston makes it that way. Team with the most potential to completely bust my prediction - the Islanders; that goaltending is legit, and even if they're on the older side and seemingly dropped Trotz for no good reason, they've still got some very good talent.
Out West it I really didn't shake the boat a lot compared to last year, but my risky pick is Vancouver making it over Los Angeles or Nashville for the last spot. The Pacific is still the weakest division overall, but again a healthy Knights team shakes things up a bit, especially after the loading up Calgary's tried to do in the wake of losing their top guys. That makes LA the team with the biggest chance to really ruin this prediction; they've got enough young talent that they're primed to explode some time soon, I'm just not sure it's this season.
For the division playoff winners, I'll go Carolina, Florida, Colorado, and, uh, screw it, let's throw Edmonton a bone. Toronto actually wins a round, though!

It was also found this week that Hockey Canada had ANOTHER slush fund to pay for sexual assault claims.
They are losing all their major sponsors for the men's programs. They are still sponsoring the women and minor hockey, and now sending the funds previously allocated to programs like the one Sheldon Kennedy runs for sexual abuse awareness and prevention. At least they're doing the right thing.
The World Juniors are in my backyard this year in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I won't be going to any of the games, I know a lot of people that normally would go that aren't. It'll be really interesting to see the attendance numbers. I hope they get empty arenas.
Pure speculation and I have zero proof, but I think the board at Hockey Canada haven't resigned because this is only the tip of the iceberg. I think they're terrified that if others (from the outside at least) took over and really looked into what the hockey culture is like and how the business was run, they'd be ruined as individuals. I hope it happens.
