With Load, you could kind of still tell it was the same band that did Master of Puppets. Anthrax on the other hand turned into an entirely different band. The sound way more catering to alternative rock fans. I'm surprised that people keep saying they like Bush era Anthrax over Belladonna era. Maybe it's just me. I find the bush era kind of boring.

The Sound of White Noise is a classic, imo.

I personally love Load and Reload.
Never was a big Anthrax fan to begin with.

Was Anthrax even in the same league as Metallica? I know they had a hit with Public Enemy and I mainly know them from when they were on Married…with Children but even among the metal fans I know, they never mention Anthrax.

The Sound of White Noise is a classic, imo. That album is fantastic. The Persistence of Time had some better songs, but that first Bush album was more consistently good.

Hy Pro Glow was a bit of a hit and it got Beavis and Butt-Head airplay. I’m not like a major fan but that and Poison My Eyes are in my Spotify.

Anthrax is part of the so-called “Big Four” of thrash metal, but they were like Herman’s Hermits and Metallica was The Beatles.

I really like Sound of White Noise and We've Come For You All is okay. I really like Anthrax. They're one of the best live bands I've seen and I have the majority of their albums. Having said that, I rarely think about them or listen to them unless they put out something new and it reminds me to go back and revisit the older stuff.
Also, I will forever argue that Load is NOT a bad album. Yes, there are clunkers like Thorn Within, Cure, and Ronnie, but damn, let's look at what IS good on this album:
- Until it Sleeps - 2X4 (has a f***ing awesome riff) - King Nothing - Hero of the Day - Bleeding Me (one of their best, in my opinion) - Mama Said (Yes, I know, but there's a hell of a lot of emotion in this song and it was pretty damn brave for them to put it on the album.) - Outlaw Torn (A masterpiece)
I know this isn't a thread on the Load album, but I always feel the need to defend it. It just blows my mind when I hear the edgelord try-hard gatekeepers get on their "ONLY THE FIRST FOUR METALLICA ALBUMS!" bullshit. Most bands would kill to be able to write a lot of the songs that Metallica wrote post-Justice. I dare say none of the Big Four outside of Metallica would be able to write something like Outlaw Torn or Fixxxer. But, they also don't have James Hetfield, so there's that as well.

Load absolutely kicks ass, all the songs you listed are really good and I feel bad for people who won't give them a chance.

Anthrax is cool, but they were never megastars on the level Metallica was/is. So that's why.
Though I enjoy Load.

Probably because they changed so drastically to the point that a lot of the older fans deserted them when the bush era came along and there was no message boards back then so folk just stopped caring. Anthrax is a kinda weird band with 3 camps of fans, joey era only, bush era only and whose who like both (like me). Scott Ian has always disliked Joey's vocals tbf and said the way Bush handled joey songs is the way he wanted them to sound in the first place. As for the alternative rock comment.... pretty much every metal band diversified in the 90s to survive

I think what happened with load is that it was their "we're back!" album after an extended delay. The booklet had pictures of them hanging out in cuban cigar suits and the music is more blues scale strum chords based, so it didn't seem like they were being serious. If they would've put out master of puppets 2/enter sandman 2 as their big "we're back!" return album, people would've been more accepting of their next release being "let's hang out and have fun" that load was. It didn't help that the direction mtv/vh1 was going in was where they were going, and metallica became the "we need a rock band on this show" like the foo fighters have become in recent years.
and to be fair, this happened with a lot of bands at the time. hootie and the blowfish, huge first album in 1995, second 1996 album, audience disappears. bush, huge first album, eh second album, audience gone by the third album. oasis big first album, huge second album, dead in america third album. smashing pumpkins were dead after 96/97 infinite sadness. and in 1997/98, mtv decided anyone with an instrument was banned anyway, so they could push backstreet boys/insync/britney spears at everyone for the next five years, so metallica would've had to put out an album of enter sandman and stairway to heaven level songs in order for it to get anywhere at the time.
until it sleeps is great, I've always enjoyed that song since it came out

So, did anyone else go on a binge listening to Anthrax songs because this thread got songs stuck in their heads? I've found that Belly of the Beast in particular has been playing on a loop in the back of my mind all morning.

Anthrax were a lot smaller.
But also, how early on did Metallica develop their reputation as talented assholes?
Was there a schadenfreude element?

Sound of White Noise & We Have Come For You All are pretty good albums imo with some great songs on them.
I can’t say that for Load era Metallica. I can’t remember the last time I listened to either Load or Reload all the way through and I’m not in a hurry to again. Fuel & King Nothing are decent though.
