So as the thread title says appetite for destruction was released on July, 21st, 1987 and while I has become an all time classic album, it took over a year for it to really get going which was helped by both sweet child O mine and the video for welcome to thread jungle getting played on MTV late at night.
It’s sold around 30 million albums and is the best selling debut album ever which is some achievement. There were other albums to follow, and firings and addiction, and break ups and riots and sympathy for the devil and Chinese democracy and a reunion, but without AFD none of the other stuff would’ve happened and GNR wouldn’t have been my favourite band for over two decades without it. Also, the album had something the subsequent ones didn’t, which was it had Steven Adler on Drums.
So, any memories or opinions on AFD ? I’m always jealous of people who bought the album when it came out and saw the band live at the time.

"Welcome to the Jungle", "Paradise City", and "Sweet Child o' Mine" are all-time classics. The rest of the album I can pretty much leave.

GNR are fantastic, but the older I get the pickier I get with their tracks. "Live and Let Die" is basically the only one from Use Your Illusion I that I regularly listen to, but with the exception of "My World" I pretty much always listen to the entirety of Use Your Illusion II. I will confess to never having listened to a second of Chinese Democracy.

Chinese democracy isn’t a bad album, it’s just it’s not a great GNR album and given the length of time we were waiting, it was never going to live up to the expectations. There were leaks before it was actually released and shock horror they were much better mixed then what we got.

If I had a top 20, it'd be in there somewhere. I definitely think it's GnR's best complete album. Use Your Illusion 1&2 are great, but there's a lot on both I could do without.
I definitely wish I was around when Appetite was first released and I could've seen them live during that period.

And just a few days ago celebrated the Guns n Roses/Metallica/Faith No More tour, which was an absolute disaster behind the scenes and during the shows.
Whoever figured GnR should headline over Metallica absolutely helped facilitate GnR's decline. Metallica went all out and made Axl look like a wannabe clown.
And I say this as someone who vastly prefers GnR over Metallica.

Guessing I'm one of the few that thinks Rocket Queen is the best song GnR ever did.

The accident with James Hetfield in Montreal was obviously bad but I don’t think Axl gave it his all when GNR came out and then f***ed off because he couldn’t hear himself. I don’t think the people of Montreal helped by destroying parts of their city. St Louis was a disaster on many levels and yes the guy shouldn’t have been filming but Axl shouldn’t have jumped off stage either. I know Axl was hard work but he didn’t help himself either when the original line up broke up because he didn’t say anything and it let slash, duff and others shape the narrative of him.

Saw them in London (can't remember where, Marquee or the Hammy O I think) with Faster Pussycat and the Quireboys. That was around the time of the albums release.

That’s an interesting take I have to say. UYI I is the Izzy heavy album between the two, which explains why I love the shit out of it. Opinion, of course, but UYI has the better ballads (Don't Cry is the best song of the trilogy and I'll get into fisticuffs with anyone who tries to convince me otherwise), and the better cover in Live and Let Die. It's a tighter, more concise album, save November Rain and Coma, because Izzy keeps it rooted down. Double Talkin' Jive is one of his best songs, imo. I don't really listen to UYI II that regularly outside of 14 Years and Pretty Tied Up. The songs are too long and bloated for me on the whole. Yesterdays is a good one, and Get in the Ring would be a lot better without that ridiculous rant in the middle of it, Axl. Guessing I'm one of the few that thinks Rocket Queen is the best song GnR ever did. Probably in my top 3 faves. Killer track. Perfect close to such a strong album. I'm at the point with Appetite where I don't even really listen to the songs everyone knows anymore. Give me My Michelle and Think About You (my absolute favorite song, and more romantic than Sweet Child, as far as I go) over Paradise City and... well, and Sweet Child any day. The big songs are big for a reason, but the deeper cuts are where the album really earns its classic status. I love this album to death.

One of my all time fav albums and a tone I still chase as a guitar player when recording!! When you really look at how Slash and Izzy were setting wise on the amps and the lack of pedals used its shocking how little they used distortion and gain settings on the amps/pedals to get their tones. In terms of Rhythm guitar work Izzy on this album really does some cool things and almost has a Bob Weir quality to his rhythm playing. Also his soloing in Think About You and Nightrain are amazing!
Small part of me has that curious factor of how AFD would have sounded if made by the original line up with Tracii Guns on lead guitar. Closest we will get is the version of Anything Goes from that Hollywood Rose album that had Tracii do guitar additions to as bonus tracks and a version of Think About You from that time recorded from the back of the room for some college radio interview they all did.
The true magic of GnR will always be Izzy coming in with a song idea, Slash doing his magic on top of that and then Axl coming in with his vocals. Closest we have gotten to that magic is the song 'Ghost' from Slash's first solo album. THAT sounds like a modern day GnR song!!
