The part that bothers me about this and the rematch was that absolutely *nobody* in the WCW camp saw the nWo interference and thought to themself "Huh, maybe I oughta shoot on down there and back him up" You could say that about any moment of NWO’s existence. WCW had like 400 wrestlers under contract I’d like those odds in a fight against the nwo. I remember in 2002 my nephew got really annoyed when the nwo came to wwf as 3 guys & caused all kinds of havoc. He was like wwf’s got like 100 guys under contract kick those 3 guys asses. That was the end of his wrestling watching days. By that point he hated nwo & was pissed it was ruining the company he liked.

I understand why they put the belt back on Hogan. Starrcade was coming. Hogan should have had a mega long reign and IMO beat Sting too.
Then Goldberg crushes him at BATB 98. 2 years to the day of the NWO forming.

Seeing the celebration afterwards, it's just jarring how they could've messed up basically everything after this point. Like, there's the Steiners! ...Oh yeah, but Scotty's just a few months away from joining the nWo. There's the Giant! ...Oh, he's going back to them, too. The fans are ecstatic that Luger overcame the interference and won clean! ...Better give Starrcade '97 a screwy finish. I sometimes disagree with people's general takes on the nWo; like, I'm ok with the fact it got so big (at least for awhile, it's supposed to be an "army", after all), I'm ok that it lasted into '98 and had the Hollywood vs. Wolfpac angle, etc. But man, they just flubbed *all* the small details and often larger climatic story beats that would've made it the greatest angle of all time. Ever worse is Luger drops the title and his reaction the next Nitro is basically shrugging and going "eh, oh well" Ah the ol' Kofi Kingston. No wait, that would make Kofi the ol' Lex Luger. Either or.

This moment is especially important to me on a personal level. I was raised by my dad who got me into wrestling. I was a little hulkamaniac and even cried when he turned.
At this time we were very poor. No cable, not home phone, no car etc. In canada ctv showed an edited 1 hour episode of raw and nitro on Saturday afternoon. Back then you could get certain channels with an antenna. Ctv being one. My dad and I always had a strained relationship after my mom left and we never did anything together. But this match he told me luger would win and we sat down and watched it together and both cheered after luger won. I can still see me and him sitting on the edge of my bed watching this little black and white TV and seeing luger win. It's one of the few really special memories of my dad growing up. So yeah the title win for this guy was the biggest thing in the world regardless of the follow up.

I remember thinking this was a really big deal.... and then six days (well seven, I didn't get the PPV) being like, "welp.... that was fun!".

This is one of my favorite moments in wrestling history. That finish and the crowd reaction was electric. As nerdy as it sounds, I was a kid, but that lead me to making Lex Luger my figurine fed's World Champion probably a day or two after. I miss these days a lot!

I remember going to the 1st nitro in boston 2 months earlier where Luger beats Hogan in like 2 minutes via submission in the middle of the show. The place went banana & it felt like a huge moment but seconds later the nwo kicked Luger’s ass & Hogan blew off the loss doing a promo about Rodzilla.
I remember my nephew spending most of that summer at my house. We watched Summerslam the night before but he was more into WCW. The next night I wanted to watch Raw on the big tv in my parents living room but he wanted to watch nitro as Luger was his guy. So because he was a guest we watched nitro live & I taped raw in my bedroom. He was so pumped that Luger won that we stayed up that night & watched my tape of that nights raw. I didn’t get to see Road Wild but he did. I had no idea what happened but the next morning we were going to the beach so when we picked him up he was so bummed that luger lost so quickly.

Great Nitro moment. Crowd reaction is worth it.

He stopped watching until early 98 when he saw Goldberg. When Goldberg lost at Starrcade he was done with wcw. I always considered him at the time much like alot of my wrestling fan friends to be hardcore casual fans. They didn’t know any behind the scenes gossip & watched religiously until something turned them off & then they would stop cold turkey never watching again.

In the late 90s I was 11-12 years old, all my friends were die hard, casual hardcore fans. I'm from Australia so it's a bit different here I suppose, but everybody loved WWF and WCW. Wrestling was very popular here for a long time, nWo and Austin shirts everywhere. Toys in Kmart had a WHOLE isle dedicated to wrestling. Now they'd be lucky to have one hook in one isle for WWE Figurines. It's moments like Hogan hogging the belt that turned people off it here. And Nitros main events starting their entrance with 6 minutes left in the show and you know it's going to be a DQ finish or there's a run in. There was a bright spot with the 'Invasion' but then WWF messed that up and I think after that all my friends lost faith in it for good. I dont know where I'm going with this but I like sharing stories!

As happy as I was when Luger won the belt about a minute or two later it just hit me, Luger was going to lose the belt at the PPV. I wasn't online or "smart" at the time but, I just know it was going to happen and was right.
I couldn't be the only one who thought that at the time, right?
