I think it was Shaun of the Dead, assuming that's an R Rating in the US. a quick comparison of US-UK age ratings: US Rating | UK Rating | G | U | PG | PG | PG-13 | 12A | R | 15 | NC-17 | 18 |
| R18 |
R and NC-17 are both 17 and up. Only difference is that with an R rating, a minor can still see it with an adult or have an adult purchase the movie for sale. NC-17 is no one under 17, period. Of course, this only applies to purchases (cinema tickets or home video). Actually watching the movie in the privacy of one's home is their own business. US movie ratings don't have any real legal weight and only serve as an advisory by the MPA trade association.
It does seem like R18 is for outright porn in the UK while they're unrated here in the US as most porn movies aren't carried in movie theaters or are recognized by the MPA. NC-17 movies are also exceedingly rare because they're more or less financial suicide. So most movies that get rated as such tone it down until it gets re-rated R.
EDIT: Apparently it changed sometime in the 90's that NC-17 is no one 17 and under as opposed to no one under 17. So the minimum age for R is 17 unaccompanied by a parent or guardian and NC-17 is flat 18.

Jackie Browne Pam Grier was Fi-i-ine.
Funny, it was rated 11+ where I live, so anyone age 11+ accompanied with an adult (18+) could see it.
Fell asleep sometime during it too, but to my (weak) defence, it was when I was doing mandatory military service, so I was somewhat sleep-deprived.

The first R rated movie experience I can remember was in 1985 when I saw Commando. I was 3.

This is the first one I remember trying to get into. Me and a friend tried to buy tickets for Action Jackson. We were probably 14 at the time. The ticket person was like, “it’s rated r, you can’t go by yourself “
So we were like, “can we have 2 tickets to moonstruck “
You know the romantic movie starring Cher, which was pg-13. Got the tickets and walked right into Action Jackson

I had to really think about this...
Growing up, we didn't have money to go to the theater, which meant we usually waited the YEAR it took for it to come out on video.
The first movie I'm almost positive I saw that was Rated R in theaters was Breakdown in 1997, which was a pretty good movie. I saw that with a friend who was a year older than me, and had a friend who was 3 years older than him, which is how we got in.
Around this time, a theater opened in town that played movies that has been in theaters for a few months, but only charged $1.50. This was a game changer in regards to seeing movies, since I started seeing movies in theaters in almost a weekly fashion, that continued until roughly 2001ish, which was when the theater finally changed their prices.
The first movie theater experience with nudity was just a couple months after Breakdown, which was Hoodlum. That was with my parents, who were very surprised by that.

Blazing Saddles.
I was nine and my sister was eleven when our parents took us to see this in the theater.

In theater, probably Butterfly Effect.
Outside of it, probably Blair Witch Project. My mother wasn't thrilled with the friend who turned that on in front of me, since I was kinda young at the time.

The first one I can remember actually in the theater is Saving Private Ryan. I was 19-20 at the time so I'm not sure if that actually is the first, but it's the earliest I can remember. I remember being part of a group date. My date fell asleep DURING THE INITIAL BATTLE SCENE!! She thought the movie was boring. Ugh!

The closest rating we have in the UK to an R is 15, so I guess it would be Grosse Pointe Blank or Blair Witch Project. It was probably Blair Witch for me. We had an old cinema in the town I now live in which barely got anyone going in after a massive 15 screen cinema opened a 5 minute walk away in the late 90’s. So they were just letting in anyone it seemed at that time to make money. I was so hyped for that film and thought it was 100% real. I was 14 I think.

Friday the 13th Part VII came out the day of my brother's friend's birthday. I got my way (for once) to get the $5 for a ticket, drink and Sno-Caps. Went with a bunch of MY friends. Funniest thing was when we went to Venture next door (where I bought my Sno-Caps) and one of the guys swiped a pack of condoms. While walking back down the concourse, he opened one and tried blowing it up like a balloon. He spit it out onto the ground, and in his words, "AAH! THESE THINGS ARE LAMINATED!" (I'm positive he meant 'lubricated', but we all burst out laughing and ran away from him.)

It was either Platoon (my Mom took me) or April Fool's Day (cousin took me). Both were released in 1986 and I can't remember which I saw first.
