I’ve always thought it was the shits and don’t see a way that it works.

I just had a funny thought. 2002 was right around the time the priest scandals began making waves.
Revend D'Von with a stable of little people wrestling Alterboys.

Bad idea for any wrestling company to get that kind of attention, worse for it to be the company that had Terry Garvin under their employ. I think Vince would have shot that suggestion down with a bazooka.

I think XPW or one of those kinds of indies did something like that. I at least remember an Altar Boy tag team from management games around then.

Loved the gimmick idea. It got him major heat when he debuted in ECW, and although it's always going to have a ceiling further up the card, he deserved more out of it than what he got. That's despite him getting a pinfall victory over Triple f***ing H of all people.
Plus this gimmick gave us Deacon Batista. So there's that too.

Bad timing... as in the gimmick might have worked 20 years before, but I can't see a wrestling priest getting anywhere at any time really. Well, unless it was Bishop Brennan D'Von as Brennan with Batista as Dougal? TAKE MY MONEY

At least he can say he beat Triple-H, and plus his theme song was awesome.

People will laugh but I honestly think Big E would knock a gimmick like this out of the park.
The New Day had some Gospel vibes to it at the beginning. I'm picturing Big E as a heel preacher and all I'm seeing is solid gold.

It wasn't too soon to split up the Dudleys, but I always found it weird the way it happened. The nWo is apparently a singular entity that can be drafted, but the Dudleys are separate entities? The fact that they didn't push for Bubba Ray to be a single's star was probably the biggest mistake. Even back then, it was clear he was a confident guy on the mic and could get over with the audience, and if anyone should have been a heel, it should have been him. But they paired him with Spike soon afterward, which didn't help either guy. Bubba could have easily been a upper midcard guy. D-Von on the other hand was saddled with a stupid gimmick. Sorry, but Reverend D-Von was likely never going to get over with most anyone, religious gimmicks are usually doomed to fail, and given that he was given the most stereotypical church leader look (Catholic collar), it was even cornier. Add to the fact that any time Vince has done a religious gimmick, he can't go as far as he wants with it, so it becomes about "love" or "believing" in something that is never made apparent...and you're a "sinner" if you don't. It's such a confusing thing for a heel to put out there. D-Von may have worked better in a Brother Love role with the gimmick, but not as an active wrestler. If anything...I would have left him with the Dudley gimmick and switched Bubba's gimmick to something else in a heel role.Subby Jay, sandwich enthusiast🤔😁🥪

The gimmick might have worked on an unknown, but this was the undercard equivalent of making Ric Flair into Spartacus.

I thought it was fine for a midcard heel gimmick. I get splitting the Dudleyz as they were super stale as a team by that point and there was really nothing left for them creatively. Them against the Hardyz had been done to absolute death by that. By early 2002 I was so tired of them feuding. So of course they put them back together seven months later and they had another two years as a team. In D-Von's case it was probably for the best as he needed the team more then Buh Buh did. Buh Buh probably would've been fine as a upper midcard guy either as a face or heel. D-Von I could see possibly getting released sooner then he did if the team isn't put back together.

One of the Alterboys just disappeared fast. The other is Luke Hawx.
