Liev Shreiber would be my preference (he's SO GOOD as the straight man and I don't know why he hasn't done more comedy) but this could be fantastic

Liam Neeson acting all intense and dramatic while completely wacky shit is happening all around him does have a ton of potential. Putting a normally dramatic actor as the lead in a movie like this is in the spirit of the original movies, so I think this could work.

Will Liam Neeson also search for The Undertaker?

Leslie Nielsen was a dramatic, leading-man type of actor before he got into comedy later in his career. I can absolutely see Neeson being great for this.

Yeah as said Leslie Nielsen pre-Airplane! was strictly a dramatic actor, and in both Police Squad! and Airplane! he played it pretty straightforward while the madness happened around him.

His scene in Ted 2 was the only part of that film that made me laugh.

I'm not one to be all "Political correctness, you can't make jokes these days!" but I dunno how this would even work. The original Police Squad didn't work because people just didn't get it. I feel like the same would be true today with the visual gags and wordplay. I mean Liam Neeson could absolutely pull it off, he just needs to play Frank Drebin or whoever like one of the aged badasses that's been his bread and butter since Taken. But I feel like this will end the way of the last reboot of an 80's cult classic he did, The A-Team.

I'm open to the idea, but I think this could be done without the Naked Gun name. It's not like a police procedural parody was exclusive to that franchise.
Yes, it might get some more eyes on the product, but it will inevitably create the same problem as every other reboot in that people compare it to the original, and with this, that comes down to laughs.
What would be interesting is a ZAZ style of police parody that would go after shows like NCIS, NYPD Blue, and Law and Order.

But nobody remembers that show which is why they want to reboot an existing property instead of doing something new in the style of.

I would be more worried/interested in who is writing new Naked Gun movies then who is staring in them... Since it would sink or swim based on the writing.

Can they just make him Frank Drebin Jr and go by the continuity of the past films? From what I understand, he IS playing Drebin’s son.

There is a line in one of the films that Frank says Drebin is Dutch Irish (his father was from Wales) .. Well Neeson has the Irish part.

As a kid I always got Liam Neeson and Leslie Nielsen confused, so this is extra funny. Schindler's List starring Leslie Nielsen! Leslie Nielsen: I could have done more. Woman: Surely, you did everything you could. Leslie: But I could have done more....and don't call me Shirley.

What they really want to do is just complain about reboots and sequels.

What they really want to do is just complain about reboots and sequels. On the one hand I agree. The audience rejects original for a known quantity. On the other I wonder if the studios are putting enough weight behind something original. Something new requires the studio to educated the consumer on what it is and what to expect. A reboot they can just throw out the name, maybe some clips of the old stuff and job done. So is the problem the studio being too lazy?
