Chris Jericho! There have been some cringey things before AEW (the Painmaker "gimmick") and the first year in All Elite had some fun moments ("I've got a ticket!"), but since then it's nearly all cringe. The ongoing JAS and sportsentertainer stuff is internal pain inducing, in every segment. Horrible. His main problem is believing himself to be a rock star. Also, being a giant tool IRL. I used to think he was cool, until a guy hears Chris Irvine speak. I'll pile on with this. He was one of my favorite acts and now I just see some cringy old man who needs to go the eff away.

Then he denounced the gimmick on live TV, saying he would never do it again and wanted to be himself...then went back to the gimmick a month later.

X-Pac was massively over as an underdog face in 99
By mid 2000 people were sick of him and Jericho made fun of him still wearing DX attire when the group was over. The heel turn on Kane killed his coolness completely.

What are some examples of performers who have gone from cutting edge to cringe over the course of their in-ring career? Obviously we could point to Ric Flair's 80 year career, but I'm looking for examples that cover a comparatively brief span of time. The example that made me think of this thread is Roddy Piper, who was absolutely red hot with Piper's Pit in the mid 80's, but then over the course of the next 10 years he becomes the personification of a dad joke trying to verbally spar with the Outsiders and just looking silly and old as f***. It is painful to watch Piper in Wrestling Bios' "Reliving The War". The haircut, the attire, his overall appearance looked like he was badly trying to mimic Bob Backlund. Same goes for the Rock 'n' Roll Express in '98 WWF. They were 40 respectively 42 years old, but looked like parodies of a bygone era.

Goldust was pretty interesting at first but by 1998 it was just like "let's see how many crazy outfits we can get him to wear." That whole run after he ditched Terri and was with Luna was really bad. Then he denounced the gimmick on live TV, saying he would never do it again and wanted to be himself...then went back to the gimmick a month later. In hindsight it was a bit silly, but at the time him doing the whole born again thing, and walking around with signs saying "He is Coming!" was fantastic. It worked so well that when Goldust did come back the pop was huge.

half of WCW's roster deciding to use it as a vehicle for their mid-life crisis killed it far worse than the finger poke IMO

Abyss went from making Kane look like he needed to be put in a retirement home to moving around like he just got bussed in from one in the absolutely depressing span of 5 or 6 years. It still hurts a lil lmao He is like Mick Foley in that both of them have sacrificed their bodies so much that they really have paid the price. Even in 1999, Mick’s wife said he was as mobile as an old man. And just like Mick, he didn't need to in order to get over. Joseph Park was a brilliant gimmick which showed just how good he was on the mic and with character work.

Then just as the company's going to die he goes back to his goofy self.

Vince Russo.
His booking style revived a company from the brink of death. Then he kept writing the same stuff in company after company and it never worked

TNA at its peak would swing between these two things on the same show, sometimes in one match

I thought they were cool as hell when I was a teenager but trying to go back and watch it now is pretty rough. The Hart Foundation is a faction from the same era that stands the test of time so much better.

It is funny how close that era of RnR looked to Huckster and The Nacho Man. They stuck out like a sore thumb.
