...the amount of people who are just yapping away to homicide cops for hours on end with no lawyer is just astounding to me. And some of them even come back the next day to bury themselves some more! Even after being apprised of their rights, they're just like, "naw, I'll just sit here and let you accuse me of murder, no big deal"
I don't know if it's ego (I'm smarter than everyone), ignorance of the law, or thinking that getting a lawyer will make you look guilty, but it is amazing.

Its the latter (getting a lawyer makes you look guilty) thats how a lot of them trip up. Im fine with it since the majority are morons.

Asking for a lawyer is a smart move no matter how innocent you are.

I think that the “if you ask for a lawyer it makes you look guilty” was likely started by the police/investigators as a way to trip people up. Get a lawyer, don’t say anything until they’re there, especially if you’re innocent.

You should start interrogating them for the reason.

My favorite bit is when the cops lie about what evidence they have, and nobody asks why they don't just arrest them right there and then.

Get a lawyer, don’t say anything until they’re there, especially if you’re innocent. It's exactly this, Police interrogations are succesful almost entirely on the back of the 'guilty' party not having legal representation and getting railroaded. So of course the investigators & police want to plant the suggestion that you automatically look guilty if you ask for a lawyer.

People don't realize that for the longest time, wiretapping someone without a warrant was only illegal for federal law enforcement. Departments like the LAPD would break into people's houses and plant a dictaphone and it wasn't illegal. When it finally was made illegal, police reacted like oh that's it, it's the end of policing as we know it!
When Miranda warnings became mandatory, police reacted the same way. Oh that's it, it's the end of policing as we know it, no one will ever talk in an interrogation, and no crimes will ever be solved!
A couple years ago, here in Washington State the state's possession law was struck down because it allowed people to be charged without proving intent. And by God, that was it! The end of policing as we know it!
Each time the police adapted and moved forward.

Asking for a lawyer is a smart move no matter how innocent you are. Exactly. Never ever ever speak to the police. You have no idea that your words can easily be misrepresented or provide help to their narrative, no matter how innocent you might be.

Is it true in the UK the cops can't lie about the evidence they have against you?

Get a lawyer, don’t say anything until they’re there, especially if you’re innocent. Another one that seems to get guilty people a lot is when the cop softens "what may have happened" for them, not realizing that climbing through that open window absolutely welds a steel door shut on their freedom. "Admitting" to a story where you kill someone that sounds "less bad" is still admitting to killing someone, no matter how "understandable" the cops make it seem. Don't get me wrong, I hope this continues to trap each and every one of them, but it always makes me shake my head at how little they understand what they just did.

Get a lawyer, don’t say anything until they’re there, especially if you’re innocent. Remember how often TV shows and movies work directly with police. There's a reason they push narratives like that, that Internal Affairs is the most evil thing ever, that cops informing on other cops is betrayal, etc. I remember the Lethal Weapon TV show having Murtaugh say that wearing a wire to deal with other cops meant he was being forced to be the "lowest form of cop". Yes, he considered it worse than being the dirty cop himself, and resented being forced to do it.

As a true crime junkie, I’m all too aware of the value of always having an attorney regardless if one is guilty or not, but some of these suspects I’ve watched are just flat out lunatics (and not the good St. Lunatic kind).
The most fun ones are watching when the detectives are just like “WTF”?
I’m not personally “canceling” that, it’s too entertaining. But maybe I’m not looking at the right videos.

I love John Oliver's recent story on just how closely linked to the police the Law and Order franchise is.

If I ever find myself in this situation, first instinct is going to be to bounce immediately if I'm not under arrest, second is going to be to ask for a lawyer and keep my mouth zipped until I get one.

I love John Oliver's recent story on just how closely linked to the police the Law and Order franchise is. I didn’t. That episode felt like an incredibly long and unnecessary guilt trip to me. I don’t see the point of shaming the fans of a television show or a genre just because it isn’t the most realistic thing in the world.
