Wow, he was one of the last promoters of the pre-WWF era still around, wasn't be? It was him, Watts, and a few people from Puerto Rico I think Yeah, I think only Watts and Carlos Colon is left unless someone from CMLL is still around. But damn, this is huge.

Also, I assume it's a typo, but there's an irony that Jarrett is misspelled in the thread title when Jeff spent years specifically telling us how to spell it. It's J-A-Double R-E-Double T, ha ha! I thought the exact same thing I swear haha

My favorite memories of Jerry involve him explaining the rules to these ridiculously convoluted gimmick matches they loved to do in Memphis, and it just seemed to go on and on and on.
RIP

Damn, what a loss for the industry. My condolences go out to Jeff and the Jarrett family. Really glad they were able to reconcile in the last few years.

His influence can't be overstated. The way wrestling is booked in North America to this day is his lasting legacy.

RIP. Say what you want about Vince, but it really says something that Vince was going to give the keys to the company to Jerry if he would have been convicted in the steroid trial. For what it's worth, Prichard swears up and down this is nonsense and was never a thought. Well, you know....RIP

My condolences to the family and friends. Memphis wrestling the one that all other promotions were compared to, and if you came close you were doing OK.
Rest in peace, sir.

I didn't know how important he was until just recently. I'm actually pretty sad that up until a year or two ago I really only knew about him from the silly "chicken salad" skit by Bruce. Jerry himself didn't even know what it was about until people started asking him about chicken salad. Jerry answered seriously in a shoot, "Yes, I make a chicken salad and it's delicious."
I enjoyed seeing him on the Tales episode. Outside of Lawler in that episode, his stories were the most enjoyable. Lawler dominated the show but Jerry wasn't far behind with his insight and stories. And those two guys were really two of the more enjoyable people on the show in general, over most of the episodes. JCP and Stampede had a few good ones but for the most part the people chosen seem pretty boring, or at least the episodes did.
From what I've read about him I do firmly believe he was tapped to be Vince's replacement. This has been something that's been out there for years. Vince then is not so much Vince now. Vince now feels he's untouchable and invincible and considering all he's gotten away with-at this point he probably is. But 1994 Vince and that steroid scandal-I'm sure he was worried.

Wow, he was one of the last promoters of the pre-WWF era still around, wasn't be? Only others I can think of still alive are Bill Watts, retired. And Gil Culkin. He helped his dad run the od MS fed back in the 70s.Gil currently helps run a fed in MS. But they also haven't had a show in months or announced another show. I am sure once I hit post I will think of at least one more promoter. But wow Jerry Jarrett. Bill Dundee does a great version of Jerry Jarrett. I saw the news about MR Jarrett passing way way earlier. But was busy. Before I was watching Mid South every week I was watching Memphis every week. From 79ish until 88 or 89 we got Memphis weekly tv in my area. Wasn't until the USWA days I learned more about who Jerry was. Always wanted to meet Mr Jarrett. Do like I have with all the other Memphis Legends I have been lucky enough to meet, thank him for making Saturdays so much fun when I was a kid.

And if you haven't go find and read Jerry Jarrett's book about the start of TNA. Great insight into what it takes to start up a new wrestlingg fed.

If Bruce Prichard told me my full legal name I would double check and look at my ID. I could buy that Jerry taking over everything was some done deal being an overstatement people ran with, but if Vince had gone to prison, Jerry would have made sense as a guy who'd be competent/experienced enough running wresting that'd be available, but also someone he could trust to hand it back. If Vince did go to prison, I doubt he'd want to just shut down, so someone would have had to run it, even if I think he doubted he was going to be convicted.

First, RIP
As for him "taking over", I think it depends on how you define taking over for Vince.
I'm sure he was supposed to be an important part of running the Day to Day business if Vince would have gone to jail, but I'm also sure Vince would have continued to be the one running the overall direction and would have had people in place to reign Jarrett in if he got to independend, like Prichard, Monsoon and Linda.
So I guess you could support both interpretations without anyone lying.

Few promoters were as well-known and as highly-regarded as Jerry Jarrett. He helped a lot of big names become stars. I'm glad that he and Jeff were able to reconcile. He will be sorely missed. RIP.

Foley posted a remembrance post on Instagram about how back in the day, damn near everyone made their way through Memphis at some point. Quite a legacy. Yeah, only a handful really made big money in Memphis, but part of that was because they had huge cards of guys. It did, however, mean that people who might not have otherwise got a chance did, and that people could network, experiment, etc. So, you probably didn't get rich in Memphis unless you were Lawler, Jerry Jarrett, or Fargo, but you stood a good chance of learning the skills to make money elsewhere. Hell, the DNA of Memphis wrestling is still seen all over the place. WWE and AEW show it, probably Impact, and Gedo booking New Japan is absolutely a guy who has learned a lot from Memphis.

Hell, the DNA of Memphis wrestling is still seen all over the place. WWE and AEW show it, probably Impact, and Gedo booking New Japan is absolutely a guy who has learned a lot from Memphis. One name that supposedly made money in Memphis was Bill Dundee. Might also by why he mostly stayed there, well and the whole most other feds were not gonna bookk a dude barely 5'6" as a main eventer. Now sure Jamie Dundee has told many "My daddy made just as much off all them titty bars he owns as he did from Jarrett and Lawler." But being Jamie who knows. Do know that for a long long time Superstar did own one of the most popular strip clubs up in TN. Jerry Jarrett wow dude managed to keep a territory where the same 8 guys were on top every week. Running the same towns the same days each week. That takes a lot of planning and just good ideas for booking. Seen quite a few pretty funny Jerry stories being posted all over the past few days. Two best are the "Girls School with Nuns" and "I just bought you that car Jeff". Search social media and you will find them and a pile more.
